LIRS Grant Idea

My idea for the grant proposal is to work along with LIRS Matching Grant Program, where they help refugees find jobs, and utilize that resource and help them to learn about budgets and how to balance their time. This would be an additional class that they could take, just like for example how LIRS offers an English class. This program would help all immigrants and refugees who are working towards finding a job and take a hold of their life. LIRS works with refugees, children, and migrants to ensure they are safe and feel welcome in different communities around the United States.

Grant

The idea I have is to help incorporate labor work jobs in their lives. I would like to use the grant money to have a resume workshop, where food and drinks will be there. I would make it a network event where other companies are there looking for people they can use in their lives. Before this network event, I would help refugees and make a resume and try and find clothes for them to wear to interview. This would help them make their way into the world and help find a starting position for a job.

Grant Pitch LIRS

My idea for the grant proposal is to have a high school work program with LIRS and offer a scholarship to an individual in the program. The scholarship would help pay for classes and books which are very expensive now a days. High School students would learn leadership skills, open their eyes to all walks of life. LIRS works with refugees, children, and migrants to ensure they are protected and welcomed into local communities throughout the United States. Targeting high school students would benefit the LIRS by growing the brand to the youth of America. High school students are already looking to build their resume for colleges what better than to help people in their local community. LIRS works with immigrants who are children, high school student maybe able to relate and communicate with them in different ways than adults.

Grant Proposal, Community Meet and Greet

LRIS has a focus on the acceptance and safe integration of immigrants, asylum seekers, and refugees into communities; they make sure to point out the humanity and need for compassion these people hold and deserve to have recognized. I believe that to that end a community meet and greet day would be useful. A simple event at which there would be light refreshments, possibly from varied cultures (budget and feasibility dependent), with information boards on both US culture and the cultures of those LIRS serves (the predominant ones at least). These would each have a snack or drink near them, and people could go to them to sample the food, learn/be inspired by the info boards, and speak to each other to better understand their differences and similarities. The event would host advocates and LIRS members, those they serve, and community members who want to learn about these people. It would be a chance to dispel some of the negativity or dehumanizing rhetoric or assumptions people may have about immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers. This would also give an opportunity to forge friendships and community ties to make the transition easier for those entering the US. It could also be made into a yearly event fairly easily.

Grant Pitch

For my grant proposal, I would like to partner up with Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service to connect refugees and immigrants with the outdoors. LIRS vision is to allowed refugees to be, “empowered in a world of just and welcoming communities statement.” This will help to connect them with Baltimore’s community, as well as familiarize them with the area. While providing for refugees is of utmost important, time to relax is important for mental health. The $1,500 dollars would go towards equipment, whether that is sports related (such as baseball bats) or kayaks for exploring the inner harbor. This equipment would last long term and would be beneficial. Stevenson athletes could even get involved to come play with families and children in their respective sport.

T. Rowe Price Grant Proposal

I would like to pitch a “Dress for Success” kind of program to the Women and Children in need connected to AWE. AWE already has some programs to help with job applications and resumes, but do they have professional clothing to wear to the interviews? This program potentially could be volunteers who help them go out shopping for clothing and other items. It could also potentially focus on the children in the fall for a “back to school” shopping day for clothing or school supplies like notebooks and bookbags. A day to go somewhere, like goodwill, with help to get specific things they need to further themselves professionally. Dressing for success could also include resume building, linkedin classes, mock interviews, and interview daycare to make sure that they can be as successful as possible if the funds can support the program.

Sponsorship with AWE

The idea that I had for my grant proposal is to provide a sponsorship between Asylee Women’s Enterprise (AWE) and Proctor and Gamble Company (P&G). Specifically, a sponsorship with P&G’s women hygienic products, since they are a major supplier. The women who are coming to AWE need assistance and one of the things we could offer them are hygienic products. This could include women’s mensuration products and could even go as far as providing products for expecting mothers. The first step is to reach out to P&G to see if they can provide a sponsorship. The purpose of receiving grant money is to build a “giving closet” in AWE where women can come and take whatever supplies they need.

Programming For LIRS

According to LIRS website, they help refugees with economic empowerment. Which helps them with work opportunities and training programs. For my grant idea, I’d like to have a coding session for refugees and other migrants that are interested in a career in IT and other technology industries of the like. We could teach the basics of programming, and other IT fundamentals. This could help the individuals with building knowledge and skills for a job in the technology industry. I believe this is a great thing to do because the technology industry, unlike other industries, do not require a four year undergraduate degree in order to get a job. This way, incoming refugees and migrants who are interested in a career in technology, they do not need to necessarily go to school for it. Our programming basics session could be the beginning of a career in technology.

Grant proposal for T. Rowe Price Foundation

My idea for the grant proposal is a yearly employment program for young teens, preferably those in high school. Working with LIRS, these teens can work/volunteer to help coordinate and run events or programs within LIRS. The goal of this project is to bring about more awareness for their cause, while also educating young minds about what it takes to run an organization like LIRS. This proposal can be run yearly, having students help throughout the year, or have two groups of students help, alternating at the half point of the year. This event could possibly be extended to college students as well, helping during the Winter and Summer while high school students work with LIRS during the Fall and spring. The reason I chose High school students as the primary audience is to help them develop leadership and team skills that will help them, both in their college years and in their future endeavors, the grant money would go towards keeping the students involved, transporting them, etc. However, this program could also be held during each summer, and we could potentially pay the students a stipend to work, building up their resumé with a job opportunity or treat it as an internship.

STEM for LIRS

For my grant idea I want to be able to work with LIRS because from their website they do not have many extra curricular for the refugees. My idea is to find out more about if they have a computers and potentially put software on the computers and implement a STEM program. Technology is the way of the world and it is a great skill for these refugees to learn and could potentially help them find employment. Stevenson University students from any of the sciences, CIS, or math department can help these refugees learn some of these different programs. Not only would it be super beneficial to the refugees but also to the Stevenson University students by allowing them to give their time into helping others who have the potential to succeed, they just need the resources.  Details on budget and more info will be determined once connecting with LIRS to find out what resources they already have. I think that this would be a great grant that would be extremely helpful and be a great service learning task for Stevenson Students.
