everyone is confused about Trump’s aid cuts to Central America

The article, A week later, everyone is confused about Trump’s aid cuts to Central America, published on April 5th, 2019 by ThinkProgress was very interesting in my opinion. This article signifies how the State Department, Congress and affected countries weren’t expecting the cuts and they don’t know what to do next.

This article talks about how the conditions in some communities in these countries affected are so bad, violence in Honduras, outright hunger in Guatemala where food insecurity is reaching famine levels, that people need to leave even if it means taking huge risks for their families. Some mothers are putting their daughters on birth control for the journey north because they know the odds of rape are extremely high and more than likely will happen. And despite all these risks, they keep leaving.

The Trump administration was in full support of giving almost 420 million dollars, while the governments of these three countries allocated 5.4 billion dollars. The supported it because this initiative supported programs that lead to lowered homicide rates, boosted job creation and helped fight corruption.

These countries governments were confused, Honduran government said they had met with national security advisor days prior. Homeland Security secretary also signed an agreement that focused on lowering migration rates the same week.

This article was very interesting to me, due to the fact that these southern countries agreed to help the migration and  President Trump decided to cut all aid for them. After reading about their conditions, this is very scary. Imagine if you were that family making its way, or have to starve every night due to hunger. “Central Americans look around the world and say, ‘I’m a human being, and there must be some place in the world where I can live free from fear and want’ — and that’s why they leave.””

Trump cuts aid

The article, Trump moves to cut aid to Central America, amid caravans and flood of refugees was very interesting. It was published on March 31, 2019 and was on Fox News. This article discusses how Trump decided to cut direct aid to El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras because their citizens were fleeing north and overwhelming U.S. resources. The White House warned them, eventually they will be closing the entire border with Mexico. The article also signifies how the U.S. is giving more than 10 billion dollars in December, and yet they keep getting information of how a a new caravan is forming in Honduras and may have more than 20,000 people.

This article was written for many reasons. Some include the fact of spreading more information about Trump and his policies. Everyone questions why he wants to build a wall, maybe this has something to do with it. Secondly, this article spreads our president, Trump’s opinions and tweets. He states that the Democrats don’t care about crime and how they don’t want any victory for Trump or the Republicans even if it helps The United States of America. Trump also states that by building a wall, which could possibly be the next step, it’ll help close the border and maybe even stop the drug flow from Mexico.

By providing a wall could have detrimental effects. This could heavily impact cross border communities, Mexican supermarkets, factories that rely on imported parts, and other businesses across the U.S and even threaten 5 million American jobs.

In my opinion, I don’t agree with President Trump’s ways and beliefs about the wall. It basically shows, as one said “It’s sending out a message to other countries that, don’t come because our borders may not work at any time. That is extremely scary and dangerous.”

Provocation Assignment – Group 1

I decided to do my assignment on Chapter 4 of Americanah. So far I really have liked the book, but I thought chapter 4 was the most relatable. Obinze is a new guy in school who was supposed to be interested in Ginka. Kayode, who decides to set Obinze up with Ginka, which is Ifemelu’s best friend. There is a party and all, Kayode, Ifemelu, Ginka and Obinze is attending. Obinze is introduced to both Ginka and Ifemelu and is more intrigued with Ifemelu than Ginka. They keep talking and Infemelu even states that, she wants to breathe the air that Obinze breathes. Infemelu says “Your guys will kill you. You’re supposed to be chasing her.(Adichie, 72)”, Obinze says “I’m chasing you. (Adichie, 72) ” This quote I thought was provoking due to the fact that Obinze is interested in Ifemelu even though he is destined to be with Ginka. Obinze also tells her what happened between his mom and the professor and why he had to change schools. This means that Obinze is really trusting Infemelu with some of his family secrets.

Question: Do you think Obinze’s mother was fired due to the fact she fought the university policy?

Carlos Hernandez

Unfortunately, I did not get to attend Carlos Hernandez discussion but from what I read he has a lot of insight. He is also a game designer and writer. He served as Literary Consultant for a forthcoming iPhone game. This was interesting to me because after I read his poem I wanted to read more. These are second hand stories from his grandmother and he describes how his grandma was and trying to remember her.

Grant

The idea I have is to help incorporate labor work jobs in their lives. I would like to use the grant money to have a resume workshop, where food and drinks will be there. I would make it a network event where other companies are there looking for people they can use in their lives. Before this network event, I would help refugees and make a resume and try and find clothes for them to wear to interview. This would help them make their way into the world and help find a starting position for a job.

Refugee Rescue

Asylum seekers are all around us. They eat, breathe, and function just like us, so why do we feel the need to kick them out? We have lost perspective as to who these people are and what they have to offer. These ‘illegals’ have faces, names, hopes, dreams and aspirations just like anyone else. It’s time we acknowledge for who they are as members of the human race. Meriam-Webster dictionary defines asylum as “a place of retreat and security” also known as a shelter (Definition of ASYLUM). According to Homeland Security, approximately 84,989 refugees and asylees come to the United States looking for a permanent home (Refugees and Asylees | Homeland Security).  Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS) is a perfect example of trying to find a better home for refugees and asylum seekers. It’s designed to help asylum seekers and anyone who is wiling to help refugees escape life threatening situations. Below is a rhetorical analysis of the Lutheran Immigration Refugee Service website. It will discuss the author, purpose, audience, genre and context of the LIRS website.

From the first view of the website one can tell that LIRS is a non-profit organization. The way one can tell is because of the column layout and the large text. The first thing that draws my attention is the DONATE button in the top right. With no need to scroll up and down, the Donate button is clickable and takes the user to payment options. This shows the primary audience are donators who are willing to help. The secondary audience are refugees and asylum seekers looking for a home. This can be proven by the navigation pane describing different tabs one can click.

click donate button to get to the payment page

The website does not have a clear designer or in this instance an author. From my perspective, the author of this website is someone that is from the LIRS executive board. This includes the board of directors, or executive committee. The board chair, Rev. Michael Rinehart, and vice chair, Mrs. Linda Stoterau. A board treasurer, secretary and executive member at large are also included in the author. These authors establish personal credability by showing the number of volunteers and how many people have had their lives changed due to LIRS right on the homepage. The author comes across as someone who wants the reader to have the most knowledge so more and more people donate. The author has a reputation to maintain because they are part of the board of directors.

As stated above, the genre of the LIRS website is a non profit. This can be stated because of the layout of the site, and the content it displays. Also, this organization does not use its donations to its personal use and are helping the refugees. Most non-profits have a navigation pane and a one column layout. The site does a good job of displaying images to draw in the website visitor to gain an emotional attachment to the user. Key features include the donate button on the top, take action section, and the images throughout the site. The video below does a good job of drawing the user in emotionally.

The context of LIRS is a website. The author chose this because with technology now a days, its very simple to get the website on your mobile device. Also, its very simple to follow these accounts on every social media aspect. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram within your pockets. The different fonts, sizes and colors help grab the attention of the user.  This website is easy to navigate and uses a sans serif font. The color scheme makes the website easy to read and professional where any donor would want in a website.

Finally, the purpose is to collect donations and raise money for their non-profit organization. This is because the DONATE button and that stands out first but then also the take action. In the take action button drop down menu there are ways to volunteer, advocate, give and host an event. LIRS mission and vision is also stated in this website underneath the about us menu. It also describes the key values this organization likes to follow.

I believe the LIRS website is a good website. It touches upon each aspect and most importantly, it’s simple and straight to the point. It can easily be navigated and no one has to question where to go so they can donate, or even the about us page. This website has the opportunity to draw in donators, researchers and even people who want to help physically.
