Ancestral Home: Chinese Immigration

This academic article is about a study on Chinese mothers who immigrate to the United States. The study specifically tackles the acculturation and parenting styles that Chinese mothers use with their children once they have arrived to the United States. The study also examines the mother’s psychological well-being and their ethnic identity resolution. For example, the article states, “This study highlighted the importance of examining interplay between ethnic identity and acculturation in promoting the psychological well-being and positive parenting of Chinese immigrant mothers in the United States.”

I found this article to be a bit surprising and very informative. The reasoning behind why I thought the article was surprising was because I was surprised to even be able to find a study on Chinese immigration. I was also surprised that many Chinese mothers do acculturate towards the mainstream American culture, ethnic identity, and parenting styles. Overall, Chinese immigrant mothers have a greater appeal towards participation in the American culture. This in turn led the mothers to have a positive psychological well being.

Article 2: Opposing Side, Migrants in the Rio Grande Valley

The article “The Border Crisis Is A Money-Making Machine For Smugglers” is about the immigration border crisis. The writer of the news article is John Daniel Davidson who is a senior Federalist correspondent. The Federalist is known to be a right leaning news source and this specific news article is Davidson’s written testimony that was delivered before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs.

The article included opinions and facts about the experience at the border in the Rio Grande Valley. Davidson includes details about the process that immigrants have to go through in order to get through the physical border. Davidson also discusses his views on why he thinks the border is a making money machine. He states, “Assuming each migrant pays $4,000 for safe passage over the border, that’s about $400 million – just for those apprehended crossing illegally in March.”

Something that this article includes that the first article did not include was the discussion of drug cartels. This article went further in depth about the reasonings and the profit that is made when immigrants cross the border. This article also uses a different kind of language when discussing this topic. For example, the first article calls asylum seekers “migrants” while this article calls them “immigrants.” However, both articles did agree on the same point, which is the immigration system is flawed.

Article 1: Migrants in the Rio Grande Valley

The news article “Shelters And City Governments Scramble To Help Migrants In The Rio Grande Valley” was found on the National Public Radio, also known as, NPR. This article was written by Reynaldo Leanos Jr. and was published on April 7, 2019. NPR is known to be a neutral but slightly left leaning bias on the media bias chart.

This article recounts the details of having to help and accommodate the amount of migrants crossing over. The article states, “More than 76,000 people were apprehended or surrendered on the Southern border in February and administration officials project that number to surpass 100,000 for March. The highest number of crossings are taking place in Texas’ Rio Grande Valley.”  The article provided a lot of factual information and it also had quotes from multiple sources who are in the Rio Grande Valley trying to help the migrants cross over. Leanos writes about the process that most migrants have to go through when they are are the valley. For example, migrants are brought to the Good Neighbor Settlement House, a homeless shelter in Brownsville, Texas,  for a short period of time and they can shower, eat, and get clean clothes.

A quote that stood out to me in the article was “… the real crisis isn’t with people asking for asylum, it’s with the immigration system itself.” This quote is resonating because that is the reason for why migrants are having a harder time with gaining asylum. Leanos states, “[In the past] a person could claim for asylum based on abuse of a violent spouse. Or because of violence inflicted by the gangs that are destabilizing much of Central America.” However, asylum-seekers are continuously coming across the border to gain abetter life in the United States and the people in the Rio Grande Valley will continue to help them.

Carlos Hernandez Reflection

The classroom visit from Carlos Hernandez was eye opening and thought provoking. He demonstrated his talents and experiences well and I appreciated his advice. Hernandez also did a reading of one of his poems and it was interesting to hear how he read his work compared to how I would read it. It gave me a different perspective. I also enjoyed hearing where he took his inspiration for the poem from.

One of the questions that I wrote down for Hernandez to answer was, “How did you get into designing a video game?”

I appreciated that his answer to the question provided a long discussion on video games, programming for video games, and designing. It showed that he had a lot of different talents and that he is able to corporate all of these talents together. Hernandez provided a lot of good insight for digital publishing and I will definitely look into reading his new book.

Sponsorship with AWE

The idea that I had for my grant proposal is to provide a sponsorship between Asylee Women’s Enterprise (AWE) and Proctor and Gamble Company (P&G). Specifically, a sponsorship with P&G’s women hygienic products, since they are a major supplier. The women who are coming to AWE need assistance and one of the things we could offer them are hygienic products. This could include women’s mensuration products and could even go as far as providing products for expecting mothers. The first step is to reach out to P&G to see if they can provide a sponsorship. The purpose of receiving grant money is to build a “giving closet” in AWE where women can come and take whatever supplies they need.

Biz Comm and Digital Publishing

On Friday, I went to Career Services and met with one of the drop-in career peers to review my resume and to discuss careers in digital publishing. The peer that I met with was very helpful and was open to critiquing and editing my resume on the spot. She went through my resume piece by piece and focused on each section thoroughly. She rearranged sections of my resume and also gave me a paper that has “buzz words” to use when describing experiences. The peer also went through the job descriptions I had and changed it to sound more professional. She went sentence by sentence and circled buzz words that I can use to change up the wording. After reviewing my resume, the peer said that my resume was good compared to others but I would have to work on the formatting and organization of it.

The last thing the career peer talked to me about was digital publishing. She did not have too much information on digital publishing but she gave me a Career Pathways sheet that is specifically for business communication students. The paper listed common pathways or careers that business communication students can go into. There was a specific section that listed internship sites for Stevenson students. One of the sub sections that was listed was “Publications and Advertising.” In this section, there were a list of businesses and organizations that past Stevenson students have interned with. This list included Baltimore Business Journal, Baltimore Research, Baltimore Sun, Bancroft Press, and many others. The peer also mentioned that if I want to learn more about careers in digital publishing, I can meet with a digital publishing advisor who would give me more information.

Rhetorical Analysis: Catholic Charities

Upon analyzing Catholic Charities website (www.catholiccharities-md.org), Catholic Charities is a non-profit organization that provides care and services to people living in Maryland. Their values include “to love, to serve, to teach, and to work for justice.” In addition to their mission statement, the purpose of Catholic Charities is to persuade people into donating or volunteering for the organization. The authors of the Catholic Charities website have credibility with this kind of work. The author includes links to news articles and current events and includes images to capture the audience’s attention. The author of the website uses rhetoric to be able to have the website stand out to their audiences, inform the audience of the organization’s purpose, and help convey the genre and context to reach relevance in today’s society.

The primary audience that Catholic Charities strives to appeal to would be the donors and volunteers. When you first come to the website, the first thing you will see is their mission statement on the right side of the screen and a blue bar that goes across the page. The first two words that are read on the blue bar are “Donate” and “Volunteer.” Underneath of the blue bar is a graphic with a button that says, “Stand With Us.” Pressing the button leads you to a page that says, “Turn compassion into action” and on the right side of the screen there and three buttons with three different colors. The first button is green and has the word “GIVE.” Green could be associated with money and in this case, it is a good choice for the author to use the color to receive donations. The second button is blue and has the word “VOLUNTEER” which is another important aspect for Catholic Charities. Lastly, the third button is orange and has the words, “LEARN MORE” which takes you back to the homepage. This was a purposeful choice that the author made because when on the “Stand With Us” page, the navigation bar is not accessible, which means that the only options that a person could do is to either give or volunteer.

The secondary audience that Catholic Charities could appeal to would be advocates, immigrants/refuges, senior citizens, people with disabilities, and people who would need poverty relief or housing and shelter. The website’s secondary audience is a wide range because of the amount of services that they do offer. “Advocate” is the third word on the blue navigation bar on the homepage. The tab takes you to a page that informs the audience on Catholic Charities advocacy and public policy. The page also includes advocacy alerts, workshops, and information on how to contact the organization. Next to the “Advocate” button on the navigation bar is the word, “Find Help.” The tab leads you to a page that has a list of services that Catholic Charities has to offer. On the top of the page, it has a tagline that reads, “Find The Help You Need From One of Our 80 Programs.” The author purposely choose to put the tagline on the top and bottom of the page to show audiences that the organization does offer a wide range of services to appeal to anyone who needs help.

Catholic Charities’ medium is a website. The author most likely chose a website platform because it would be easily accessible to anyone who could access a phone or a computer. The primary reason for why the author chose a website would be to easily collect donations and to have volunteers contact the organization without having to find a location to go to. A secondary reason for the website is to provide people with resources. These resources include help with immigration, poverty relief, housing and shelter, community and neighborhood based services, and 80 other services. The historical convention for this website is that with the ongoing issues on immigration and refuges within the United States, people need to be able to find resources without fear of “being caught.” They want to be discreet with their actions for providing themselves with a better life.

Overall, Catholic Charities website is easy to navigate through. The tabs are straight forward and takes you to where you need to go. The website can be word heavy, however, it compensates with images and color. The website sticks to the same color scheme, most likely to ensure people that they are still on the same website. This would also help with people who have disabilities. The website also has credibility because it provides information and updates on government actions. The website is also well organized and keeps everything condensed into six tabs. The website could improve on adding auditory aids or add an option for different languages. This would satisfy a bigger range of audience and possibly bring more traffic to the website.
