I thought that this was a very interesting scene because you really get to see and understand the relationship between Iris and Papa. The setting starts out with iris and papa in the nether under a vault of tress. They talk about the other kids in the hideaway and how Iris is a jealous kind of person. Papa goes on to explain how she is special to him then says “Well, of course you are special. It seems one of our guest have noticed it too.”(Haley 35). He is talking about Mr. Woodnut and how them too are spend a great amount of time together. This could show how papa is jealous but tries to hide his emotions. Papa had brought a hugh box with him, when he revealed what was in it iris was fascinated. It was a beautiful cake made with never melting ice. They talk about there feelings towards each other and papa explains that this day was all for her, since earlier in the book she wanted a day for herself. The most important part of the scene is the end when iris tells papa “I love you” (Haley 38) and he hesitates to respond.
What do you think Papa’s real feelings are towards Iris or is he just using her?
I feel as though papa is initially using iris for his own benefits, and the benefits of his other virtual users. They use her to get all of their desire out, virtually. So that they will not act on their urges in the real world, which is against the law. but as the play goes on i think that he realizes that he really cares for her, but i don’t necessarily think he wants to accept the fact that he truly cares about iris.
I think that there was a real version of “Iris” outside of The Nether, and i think that Pappa sees her in this virtual world that he has created. I don’t think that he is using her i think that he is starting to realize what he is doing is wrong and that he is starting to pull away from her.
I think Papa is using her up to this point in the play. I say that because he can’t do any of this in the real world so he is doing it virtually where it isn’t consider illegally. But once you read on Papa somehow realizes he cares for Iris more then he thinks and doesn’t anyone else to have her.
Part of me wants to think that Papa has real feelings for Iris but the majority of me says that Papa is just using Iris. The whole reason that the hideaway was created was because Sims had feelings for his neighbor that was 9. He created this world to contain his feelings so he does not act upon his feelings in the real world. So when talking about Iris, I feel that he is using her as a way of expressing his feelings.
I think Papa’s feelings are real towards Iris. He probably was afraid to express his feelings. Also, I think Papa thinks of Iris as his daughter in the Nether realm.
