VR Pitch

There are many rules, regulations, and certifications when it come to the construction industry. OSHA is just one example of a training program for construction workers to learn the prevention of safety and health hazards in the workplace. Another example would be NCCCO which is a commission that makes sure your certified to operate cranes. But what if you could learn all about the safety steps or how to operate machines through seeing it in virtual reality. You would be able to see real life examples of a hazards constructions sites without actually being there, or you would be able to operate a crane without any real risks. This Virtual reality device will give you a real-life experience in numerous fields of construction. Not only will this device allow you to see these tasks but also teach you the correct way to perform them. This ranges everywhere from the more advance task like operating a crane all the way down to using a jack hammer to remove a side walk. The way that this device will operate is through an app. A list of every certification you can earn will appear. You will then choose the type of certification you would like to explore and become an expert in. It will take you through step by step on how everything works and how to operate the type of machine. It will then give you an in-field test where you have to perform every task correctly to pass the course. Once you have passed the Virtually Reality course you will be more than prepared to take a real-life test to earn your certification. The intended audiences would be construction workers or adults looking to go into the construction industry. Gender dose not play a factor and ages between 18 to 50. The way that I will reach my audience will be advertising to people trying to get certified in a certain field, or to people that are having trouble passing their test.

Provocations Scene 10

I thought that this was a very interesting scene because you really get to see and understand the relationship between Iris and Papa. The setting starts out with iris and papa in the nether under a vault of tress. They talk about the other kids in the hideaway and how Iris is a jealous kind of person. Papa goes on to explain how she is special to him then says “Well, of course you are special. It seems one of our guest have noticed it too.”(Haley 35). He is talking about Mr. Woodnut and how them too are spend a great amount of time together. This could show how papa is jealous but tries to hide his emotions. Papa had brought a hugh box with him, when he revealed what was in it iris was fascinated. It was a beautiful cake made with never melting ice. They talk about there feelings towards each other and papa explains that this day was all for her, since earlier in the book she wanted a day for herself. The most important part of the scene is the end when iris tells papa “I love you” (Haley 38) and he hesitates to respond.

What do you think Papa’s real feelings are towards Iris or is he just using her?

Online Reading is Hurting More Than Helping

Do you ever have trouble staying focus while reading online? Do you ever not remember what you have read after reading online? If yes, do not worry you are not the only one. This happens to the majority of users that read online.  I am a college student attending Stevenson University studying business administration. I have put in intensive research on the benefits and issues with reading and learning using technology, such as the Internet. The research that I have been looking into has been highly referred articles written by important authors. The Internet is changing the way we read and research and is causing more harm than it is helping us. This is due to being distracted while reading, and also not fully comprehending what we read while online.

The Internet is a very complexed and confusing network to understand. Trying to read and research online has its downfalls and issues. For so long we have been using books as devices to help us learn, research, and read. Deviating away from this is going to have its disadvantages, one being the ability to comprehend what we have read. According to Jabr “Researchers have suggested that people comprehend less when they read on a screen because screen-based reading is more physically and mentally taxing than reading on paper” (“Reading Brain in The Digital Age”). Jabr explains how physically and mentally taxing reading online really is. The reason it is so mentally taxing is because the bright light the computer screens generating causes the brain to only be focused for a certain amount of time. Comprehension is one of the most important aspects of reading. Taking that away from the reader infers with his/her ability to understand the article. The purpose of reading is to absorbed and reflect on the opinion and information of the author, without being able to comprehend you are at an enormous disadvantage. Another reason why digital reading is not beneficial is the way it interferes with the navigation of text and key word search. According to Jabr “In contrast, most screens, e-readers, smartphones and tablets interfere with intuitive navigation of a text and inhibit people from mapping the journey in their minds. A reader of digital text might scroll through a seamless stream of words, tap forward one page at a time or use the search function to immediately locate a particular phrase—but it is difficult to see any one passage in the context of the entire text” (“Reading Brain in Digital Age”). Digital reading vs reading on paper takes away from the navigation of text. The navigation of text allows you to map out the journey while you read and remember certain parts of the text. Digital text is a long continuous stream of words with no points to distinguish where you are in the passage. This is taking away from your ability to understand and comprehend part by part of a passage. Also, people on the Internet will be using key search to find the important parts of the story. Doing this makes you lose all context of the information your pulling out making you not fully understanding it. These two examples just show how much the Internet interferes with our potential of learning. Like taking short cuts to pull out information and when actually trying to read not being able to fully understand what the author is saying.

While I believe that digital text is harmful to users on the other hand people believe that there are benefits to using it. One argument people use is that digital text is interactive while normal text is not. For instance, while reading text online there are the use of hyperlinks to future research information. Susanne Murphy states “That respectful links to work done by other authors will better help the audiences understand the message she is trying to get across. (“Plagiarism Is Dead, Murphy”). I disagree with this statement for a few reasons. Yes, hyperlinks can be helpful at times to help you better understand what the author says, but most times following these hyperlinks are going to get you distracted and off topic. You can start at one link follow that to another then link, then all the sudden you are reading digital text that has nothing in common to the original article you were reading. This therefor wasting your time, distracting you from your reading, and taking away knowledge that could have been gained by just reading what the author wrote.  Also, hyperlink can cause confusion to the reader. The author of an article may put a hyperlink in intended for a specific purpose. If comprehended wrong by the reader, their purpose of the whole article is going to waste and clouding up the information that was trying to be presented. Another reason why people say digital text is helpful is due to online media. They think that videos and different sort of media will help you learn. According to Carr “Media and other technologies are playing important roles in shaping how we learn online.” (“Is Google Making Us Stupid”).  Media is actually hurting us way more than it is benefiting us. One second we will be reading than all the sudden an email announces its arrival, we glance over stop reading and lose the place we were at. While reading, you want to be as concentrated as possible, having these pop-ups occur is taking your concentration off your work and making you lose your place.

For instance, I have had trouble with compressions and navigations using digital text throughout my life. As a middle schooler, I relied heavy on taped books to help me better understand the material I was reading. I would have a hard copy of the book and a tape player that would read aloud to me. This strategy work very well and had tremendous benefits. As I transitioned to high school instead of using hard copies of the books and tape player they used Online text that read aloud. Immediately I noticed the decline in my comprehension. I was only able to remember certain part of information. I would find myself having to read the article over and over just to try and understand a little bit more of the material. Just like I explained earlier about navigation of text this site we used was just a long continuous stream of word. Being very difficult to make connections and place where you are in the story. After my experiences, I think that digital text makes it more difficult and there are many other beneficial ways to read.

In conclusion, I believe that digital text and using the Internet as a prime source is going to be detrimental to our future. As an education system, we should stop relying on technology and go back to the learning styles that we have already adapted to and that are most efficient. Learning styles such as annotating books and papers and actively reading. Our future generations need to go through a school system that going to allow them to reach their full potential, not hold them back because of comprehension skills and distractions. In the end we need to realize what is important and what we can rely on.

My Story

Hi my name is Beau Schmeusser I am 18 years old and I am studying business administration here at Stevenson. I came to Stevenson to earn a bachelor degree but also to pursue my love for lacrosse. I am the middle child, I have an older brother and younger sister, also been very close with my family. I grew up in a small town in chester county called Kennett square. I attended Kennett consolidated school district where I spent all 12 years of my early education. I have always had a love for sports growing up, playing baseball, basketball, soccer and lacrosse.

If you would have asked me 10 years ago where I thought I would be, I don’t think I would have said a college student as stevenson university. When I was little I hated reading more than anything in the world. You couldn’t pay me all the money in the world to read a book.

To start I was never the best at school and didn’t pick up on things fast as a child. I had setbacks due to my reading and writing skills. I had to take special education classes all the way up until high school. One very helpful and important person that aided me to overcome these challenges was Mrs. Knight. We always referred to her as Mrs. K. She was my elementary Special Ed teacher for reading and writing. She was a fairly old lady with gray hair and always had a smile on her face. I was in here class all through elementary school which substituted my normal reading classes. I was one out of the other ten kids that took that class. She helped us pick up on the basic skills of reading and writing and helped teach us in different methods so that we could better understand. She would help better explain things that we could not get a grasp of for example vocab and grammar. We would have vocabulary exercises to complete each day and always had a read aloud with Mrs. Knight before leaving for the day. I couldn’t image where I would be today without having Mrs. Knight help as a young child.

Another tool I used to help me learn how to read and write was a program called Read Naturally. This was one of our assignments we had to compete in Mrs. Knight room. Luckey our school district had bought the program for our class to use. It consisted of about five different reading levels with each reading level having 100 stories. It also came with cassette tape player and cassette. The way the program worked was to have a cold time, which would be reading the story for the first time and taking a baseline score. Once you had your score you had to approve upon that score to pass that story and move onto the next one. You would have the story read to you on the cassette player a certain amount of times, then practice on the vocabulary you don’t understand , and then practice the story yourself enough times until you think you got it down. Once you were ready would take your hot time with your teacher and hoped your passed the story. This program gave the the extra practice I needed to become more fluent as a reader and also gave me more confidence as a reader.

My final influence that helped me to read and write was my freshmen and sophomore english teacher. My teacher’s name was Mrs. Mcdonald- Jones but always went by Mrs. Mc J. She was a very nice and understanding teacher, but also became very strict when it came time to work. She was also a die hard penn state fan after graduating from the school with a degree for teaching. As I entered high school my reading skills had improved but still needed some work. She helped me expand on my knowledge of different writing styles, like compare and contrast essays, informational essays, narratives. This really opened my eyes to new ways of writing so I wasn’t writing the same boring thing over and over. Before high school I knew of those techniques but never knew how to apply them to my writing. She also gave me tremendous amounts of useful feedback on my essays and held conferences with each kid in the class to explain what you were doing wrong and how to correct your errors. Having those important conferences really improved my grammar skills and taught me how to take my writing to the next level and also prepare myself for college. I am so grateful to have all these positive influential tool/people in my life to help me succeed and be where I am today.

In the end I know that everything I have accomplished so far in my life regarding my reading and writing skills will benefit me in my future. After graduating from college with a business degree, I plan to take over my family’s construction company. I am going to need all the stills I have learned in writing and read to complete the complicated tasks in the construction world. Having learned these skills will give me the advantage in sounding more sophisticated and more respected talking to customers. It will influence my life goals and allow myself to set higher standards than I ever thought I would be able to. My journey is not over yet and am excited to learn the rest of the skills I need to be a contributing human in society.
