Academic Ancestral Research

I was  looking on the Stevenson Library database and I found a journal article that talks about the German immigrants became the white southerners because they had moved to South Carolina. The title of the journal article is called “How the Germans Became White Southerners: German Immigrants and African Americans in Charleston, South Carolina, 1860-1880” When my great grand parents first came to America, they had lived in South Carolina and I think that this article would be a good fit for ancestral research.

This journal article is basically giving statistics from the years of 1860 through 1880. Five percent of the total population in Charleston was German in 1860 and by 1880 there was a decrease in the number of Germans in the area of Charleston.

The biggest reason for the decrease in German population was the Civil War. When the Civil War first started, a majority of the Germans had left Charleston and moved to different cities to continue their business. After the war ended, German businesses expanded and as they were expanding they were employing hundreds of residents from Charleston. During the expansion of these business, they had to find more people to run and work the companies. So they started to employ African Americans and white southerners to work along side of the Germans.

A good result of Germans moving to Charleston was that there was a huge cultural exchange for the Germans. The Germans created their own social and cultural institutions and continuously spread the culture to Germany and South Carolina. Germans in Charleston also kept strong roots to their homeland and culture.

Isis Hails Donald Trump’s Muslim Immigration Restrictions as a ‘blessed ban’

Al Qaeda, Isis and other jihadi groups could not be more excited that President Trump’s immigrant order is targeting Muslim countries. This ban temporarily  suspended the United States refugee program and it bans citizens of several muslim countries from entering the United States. This ban then cause controversy dealing with people trying to come back into the country that had green cards, legal work or study visas should be allowed back into this country or should they be sent back to where they came from. Many people that hold visas we being held and turned away from us flights because of this order. many politicians are worried that this order will fuel these groups and will end up helping them recruit future members. This is not good for this country because it is showing other countries that we have a problem with these people. it also shows as proof that the US is at war with Islam.

Trump’s Stance on Refugees is a Discrace

President Trump is firing and getting rid of a lot people while he is in the White House, so it really isn’t that much of a surprise that President Trump is deciding to cut the number of refugees that are allowed into this country. Since starting the refugee resettlement program in 1980, this current cap for refugees is standing at 45,000 refugees. This cap is the lowest that it has ever been. The United States has been the number one country that allows the most refugees into the country out of any of the countries in this world. Pompeo says that the United States can’t process any more refugees because there is already to many requests that they can not grant. many people may be worried that these refugees might try and carry out a terrorist attack but ever since the United States started allowing refugees into the country not one terrorist attack has happened by a refugee and Pompeo says that there is no reason to be worried about an attack because a terrorist attack will not happen by a refugee. The White House is trying not to bring foreign people into this country and we can see that because the White House is trying to propose a foreign aid cut by almost 30 percent.

Hernandez reflection

Having Carlos Hernandez come to class was a very good experience for me. I thought that it was very interesting with what he had to say about the deals that he has with Disney. Hearing him talk about his contract with Disney was really interesting and it made me want to hear more about the full extent of his contract. I would of loved to hear more about his second book that he is writing for Disney. Hearing about his first book really makes me want to go and read it just because of the way that he was giving us the quick over view of the new book. I think that some of his tips that he gave on how he writes a book can be transferred into how we write papers. Some of his tips that he had for writing were very interesting and they did make sense and they were good tips.

Grant Proposal

For my idea for the grant is to to do an international food night at Stevenson University for the LIRS. For this event it would be open to the public and to Stevenson student. We would invite some of the refugees that have started to make a life for themselves here and have them, if they are willing, to make 2-3  dishes that are very popular in there family and popular in the country from where they are from. There would be a cover charge of $15 for the people to get it. All of the money that is taken in with the cover charger would be donated right back to the LIRS to help them get other refugees out of their country. I would also have a donation box set up inside of the event if people would like to make a cash donation to the LIRS. The money that the grant gives us, we would use it to reimburse all of the people that made food for the event.

Career Service Meeting

I was not able to attend the Career Fair on Wednesday night, so I went and talked to Career Services and talked to them about how I can connect digital publishing with my career. Basically, all we talked about were the types of things that get published within the career of the sciences. We talked about how nurses will publish results over the internet. We said that doctors publish research of their finds all the time on the internet. We talked about how when people are doing cancer research will post their research on the internet.

With me being an Applied Mathematics, I am looking to be an actuary.  I will be projecting figures for future years, creating charts for the projected numbers, and by creating graphs. all of these things will be put online. All of these things will and can be projected over the internet. Digital publishing is always relevant when talking about my career. Most of my work is done on the internet or over the internet meaning that it is corresponding over email or Skype. When talking to the lady from Career Services, we said that the things that are really going to be published are the projected figures on the companies website that I am projecting the numbers for.

Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS)

The Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS) is a nonprofit website that gives information about immigrants and refugees that are coming over and seeking assistance from LIRS. They also are trying to get people in the United States to help and give their time to help out and donate to help keep the organization running so they can help as many immigrants and refugees they can. This is a great website to a rhetorical analysis of. By doing a rhetorical analysis of this website, you get a better understanding of what the creator and authors wants the audience to understand and to take away from after visiting this site.

The primary audience that the author is trying to target is people that are looking or want to donate to help the LIRS, an audience that is looking to volunteer or help in any way that they can, and another primary audience that this website it trying to attract is people that are looking to adopt a child. A secondary audience that this website attracts is students that are doing research on refugees for projects. Some values and opinions that the primary audience holds are being compassionate and being kind hearted. These people want to make a difference is peoples lives and they can do so through this organization. The values and opinions of the secondary audience is that they are looking to achieve something. The author does appeal to these values and opinions because they are looking for money from the audience and they are also giving information to the audience.

This screenshot is of the navigation pane where you can find the donate button.

People go this website for a certain purpose. This website was created for a purpose and the way that the website looks and what the website says tells and shows the purpose that was in mind for the audience. When thinking about the overall intention of this text, the mission statement tells the audience what the intention is. “We stand with and advocate for migrants and refugees, transforming communities through ministries of service and justice.” (“Mission & Vision”). Mission statements are meant to show what the organization is trying to do. This mission statement says that they are standing with and being advocates for migrants and refugees. They are also saying that they are helping the community by transforming the community through their work. The secondary intention would to be to get money from people to help immigrants that are coming over here and to pay for the expenses that they have to run this organization. I say this because they have a donate section for people to donate any amount of money that they are able to donate.

This is the screenshot of the LIRS about us page. You can see that their mission is located here.

The medium of this is a website. The authors chose this because it is a super easy way to get all the information out to the public that they need to, and they can put any and all information that they want to. Also, with having technology being the way of the future, it just makes sense to put all of the information on the internet. Because this is a website that means that I was able to find this on the internet. The historical conventions for these types of text was over the phone calls, brochures, letters, and pamphlets. There are many ways for the reader to interact with this website. The reader will interact with this website over their phone, over a desktop computer, and over their laptop. This website is very easy to access, and it makes for easy use and it is very easy to move around in their website.

This is the Refugees page. This page explain all that they do to help the refugees. what is circles in red is a tab where you can find all the information on what they are trying to accomplish and what they do for the refugees, children, migrants and gives you the page to the travel loan portal.

The way that the author writes the information really makes a difference in how the reader reads a text and it also helps get the reader to understand really what the author is trying to say. The authors establish personal creditability by showing the numbers of volunteers, how many people they have helped and how many partners they have working with them. The author wants to come across in a very accepting way. They do not want to force anything upon the reader. The author comes across as very informative. They just wanted you to know the information so you would donate or think about giving up some of your time to help them out and volunteer for them. I do not feel as if the author has a certain reputation to hold. I feel like that the authors really just wants to inform people about what is going on and I feel like they do a very good job at that. Since this website is a nonprofit organization, there are normally this many authors for the website. The authors include: Board Chair – The Rev. Michael Rinehart, Vice Chair – Mrs. Linda Stoterau, Board Treasurer – Mr. Dennis Wieckert, Board Secretary- Mr. Evan Moilan, Executive Member at Large – Ms. Judith Benke.

This is the Leadership page where you will find the executive members and the
At-Large members.

This website is a nonprofit website. Which makes this text a hortatory because the author is trying to encourage the audience to either help them by volunteering or help them out by donating money. This website is similar to other websites in this genre because they are asking for help, meaning your time. They are also asking for you to make a donation. They give you sad information about the immigrants and the refugees to play to your feelings and your emotions to make you want to help. There are some key features that make it a hortatory. One feature that makes it a hortatory is the donate button at the top right-hand side of the website. Another feature that shows it’s a hortatory is the take action section in the middle at the top of the page.

This is where you will find the “Take Action” in the navigation pane. Which allows the users the opportunity to give back and help out.
