Gastrointestinal Track Maze

As the society grows, there are more processed foods and preservatives added to many different things that we eat. This virtual reality game focuses on learning the different parts of the stomach and their functions. Most high school students are not aware of the functions of the parts in your stomach.  In order to get through to the next level of the stomach, you have to drag the correct name to its matching counterpart of the stomach, and once you get it correct, you will collect the foods that you have eaten that day such as strawberries, pineapples, and chicken. Once you get the name of the part right, a voice over will read the function of each part. Each part will have a different voice over so the maze does not bore anyone. To make it more entertaining and calming, instrumental music of your choice will be playing while you go through the maze. You can go through the type of body you pick. It can be male or female even though the gastrointestinal track is the same. You can pick either one because they would have eaten different things or one just might prefer a specific gender. Depending on the type of person you choose, they could have a gastrointestinal problem like IBS or Crohn’s Disease. If they have either problem, you will be able to cure them or help them lower the pain in their stomach. From personal experience, I know that many people around the age 16-21 years old do not know much about their gastrointestinal track. Age groups around this age usually use their phones so a app would be a good way to target them, but if they are still in middle school and high school I would target the teachers.  I personally know that some people do not know about their gastrointestinal track like myself. I did not know that the more acidic foods you eat, the less your stomach can digest the food. In addition, when I had tremendous pain it was actually a serious problem. Having this new virtual reality game will educate the youth who do not like to research or read about certain situations. If they are interested in video games, this will be a different kind of learning game for them to experience. For this game, there are no official rules or age requirements. I hope that this game contributes to the knowledge of the youth as a whole.

Su shi

I chose this avatar to look like this because I wanted her to look different from all the other original gunters (AKA males). I gave her purple eyes because that is my favorite color so I wanted her to resemble something that I like. She has dark lipstick because it looks like she’s ready to hunt. In my opinion she doesn’t look too angry but she looks like she’s ready to get down to business. She has black hair so she won’t stand out too much since she is already a girl. I gave her the name Su shi because it reminded me of Sushi but just separate and something way different from my name. The background gives her a little tougher look since its darker than her face and blue is also another one of my favorite colors.

Scene 3: Morris is interrogating Sims to let him know that she doesn’t care too much about him as a person, she cares more about the hide away. Sims think he has registered it correctly under the laws. Morris wants to know where his server is so she can cut the hide away down. Sims thinks that since it isn’t in this country it’s not under Morris jurisdiction (Sims,12). Morris is explaining to him how his hide away makes a good amount of money and wants to know why he chose this life? She questions him about how much time he spends online with something that isn’t real (Morris,13). Sims tries to justify why he stays online for so long. Which is because it is apart of everyone’s everyday life. Morris wonders if his wife knows about this roll that he plays in the hide away. Sims wife does not know much about it she is aware as she wants to be. Morris states that “he can be charged but once they have his hardware and deletes his realm then he will be free without being charged” (The Nether, 13). Sims does not want to give up his server, and goes on about how this is against the law. Sims becomes quiet and explains why he made this virtual world and why he does it himself. And he made it for people who can’t be themselves in the real world (The Nether,15),.

Question: Do you think Sims should get convicted for his virtual world and actions even though his actions aren’t in real life? Explain your answer.

The Evolution of Digital Reading

Gerd Leonhard.Flickr. 29 December 2015.

Do you prefer reading the news online or in a newspaper? How many times do you use the Internet? If you do you are becoming like the average reader. Digital reading has grown over the years in the work place, educational establishments, and home environments. According to Ferris Jabr, “in the U.S, e-books currently make up between 15 and 20 percent of all trade book sales” (“The Reading Brain in the Digital Age: The Science of Paper versus Screens”). Digital technology has changed the way we read in many ways, it is ubiquitous, convenient, and more generations are adapting to this style of reading. To cope with/ adjust to this schools should adapt to digital technology by teaching students how to use the web for educational purposes.

Digital reading is ubiquitous in our society (Murphy). Susanne Murphy, author of “Plagiarism is Dead; Long Live the Retweet: Unpacking an Identity Crisis in Digital Content” stated that we cannot get away from technology; it is now in our everyday lives. I agree with this because the ease of digital reading is beneficial compared to using printed books as a source of information. In my English class, we read articles online and can annotate while we read. Annotating and reading at the same time keeps you focused rather than scrolling and going to different websites.  Journalist Nicholas Carr stated that he “has been spending a lot of time online, searching and surfing and sometimes adding to the great databases of the Internet” (“Is Google Making Us Stupid”). In other words, Carr uses the Internet for more than just researching. He uses it during his free time to find out new information and he does not get too distracted because he is learning more from the Internet. I have experienced using the Internet since I was very young, as well as since I was able to read at age five. I used the Internet when I was younger to go on educational websites that had games to help me with reading. Now that I am older, I use the Internet for research and can annotate online.

In addition to digital reading being ubiquitous, it is also a more convenient way to stay updated with new information or to read novels by various authors. Instead of having to bring ten books along with us, technology allows us to have all the texts we need at the tips of our fingers, using any type of smart device. Scott Karp, who writes a blog about online media, recently “confessed that he has stopped reading books altogether even though in college he was a lit major” (qtd. in Carr). His confession in Carr’s article is important because he is saying that books have gone extinct to him because the web is more convenient, and he wonders if his style of thinking has changed. Scott has become more capable of just going to the Internet to search for what he needs to read or find out. Like Carr, I frequently use the Internet to search for something that I do not know, rather than searching through stacks of books that have the information I need. There have been many technological advancements such as smartphones, iPads and Kindles made available to readers. These devices are very lightweight, which makes it more portable. In the society we live in today, we always see people grab their cellphones before leaving the house. Engineers and designers have worked hard to make reading printed or digital text as simple as possible (Jabr).

Digital reading has become common amongst all generations. For instance, “in a viral YouTube video from October 2011 a one-year-old sweeps her fingers across an iPad screen, shuffling groups of icons. In the following scenes, she appears to pinch, swipe and prod the pages of paper magazines as though they too were screens” (Jabr). This shows how one-year-olds are even adapting to digital reading because of all the new technology. As in the video, I had experienced my god-niece using an iPad for educational purposes and she knows how to use it without a lot of assistance. I see why the girl in the video did not understand how to read a regular book. However, Carr stated, “we read more today than back in the day, our brains aren’t custom to digital text” (“Is Google Making Us Stupid?”). I think Nicholas Carr is mistaken because he overlooks how older generations such as people’s grandparents and parents know how to use iPads to surf the web for anything they need. In fact, many older people use the Internet as much as the younger generations.

According to a survey by Ziming Liu ,at San Jose State University “…..concluded that people reading on screens take a lot of shortcuts – they spend more time browsing, scanning and hunting for keywords compared with people reading on paper” (Jabr). The web has hyperlinks for readers to go to another article just in case they want to read other articles pertaining to a term or phrase written in the article. Similarity, Ferris Jabr’s studies concluded that people read more slowly and less accurately on computers than printed text or book (“The Reading Brain in The Digital Age: The Science of Paper versus Screens”). I oppose this statement because the style of reading depends on the attitude the reader has towards the content of the written work you are reading. For example, if one is not interested in what the author is writing about, he/she might not be able to focus on the text whether it is on paper or online. If the reader is interested in what they are reading, they will focus despite if it is on printed text or the web.

However younger generations usually use the web during their leisure time through interacting on certain socially driven websites such as Twitter, Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram, etc. Older generations also utilize these social media platforms as well, with Facebook being the most popular website, which means they are adapting to the new technology around us too. Generations will keep adapting to new technology advancements. These adaptations should include our schools. For instance, Susanne Murphy stated, “it is time to move beyond the gotacha games of traditional citation protocols” (“Plagiarism is dead; long live the Retweet: Unpacking an Identity Crisis in Digital Content”). According to Murphy, it is time for the educational system to advance in their ways such as changing the way we cite information because there are a variety of ways to cite. One way that has to do with generations growing is being able to retweet someone’s tweet on Twitter. It shows that you are directly thinking the same thing.

As a result, the education system should adapt to the digital age by educating everyone about new technology once it is available to everyone. Changing the way professors teach could consist of using updated sources and new technology people are interested in. For example, in schools and colleges we should be able to download our books through the app store and see it on our phones just like a regular book. Alternatively, if schools would be losing money, students should be able to get an iPad for the years that they are in school to read their textbooks and do homework.  Teachers should teach students to interact intelligently with online reading by teaching them programs such as hypothesis, also how to work twitter, and other social medias that would help them. In the future, I believe there will be a lot more advances in technology, perhaps even robots teaching our future generations. As a whole, we just have to educate ourselves on the new technology that we will be encountering soon and schools need to play a major role in helping with educating students.

The Nether

The showing of The Nether was actually a good play. It was about a man (Sims) who created a virtual world for people who wanted to express themselves and not be judged (well his intentions). After all The Nether didn’t agree with this “virtual world”. Sims was being interrogated by detective Morris about his technically “illegal” activities. Morris argues that we should be able to express our fantasies without consequences. Throughout the play the roles of the characters actually come out, the detective was actually Mr. Woodnut trying to find out all the information about the virtual world. Doyle which was the little girl Iris in the virtual world, he was playing a different sex role which we had found  out because Iris said she won award in science.

Personally  I think the play could’ve improved on props. I say this because when Iris described her bed room we had to picture it ourselves, maybe they could’ve made one of the ones a bed room. Also when they explained the garden maybe with a fake tree to represent a sapling and a poplar. When they explain the house he lived in maybe have a little representation of it.

The play was good overall. I liked the lighting which was good because it wasn’t too dim or too bright you could see everything clearly. I like when they made the stage dark in between scenes and played the video game music in the background. It made me realize that they made it seem more virtual for the audience. The pitch of their voices were loud enough for you to hear even if it was a part not too dramatic. The emotion of the characters were good they played their parts really well to act as if they were the characters.

Who I Am Today

Reading and writing are vital elements for any human being to have, especially in modern society. Being literate means having the ability to read and write. Do you remember the first time you learned how to read and write? Or even thought about who or what tools helped you obtain an adequate reading level?

My name is Jewel Bowlding, I grew up in a suburban area in Bowie, Maryland. I went to grade school ten minutes away from my house called High Bridge Elementary School. It was an old small elementary school because I have a cousin who attended the same school thirty plus years ago. The school taught kindergartners all the way up to fifth graders, and I had a great learning experience there from 2nd grade until the time I had to leave and go to middle school. Personally, I loved reading new books. I never read before, especially books that had illustrations.

Although I had a rough time in second grade, I managed to succeed. Second grade was tough because I could not get my reading and writing levels high enough to where they needed to be in order to progress into the third grade. In the middle of my second-grade year, my teacher Ms. Parker had a meeting with my mom and grandmother to warn them that I was in danger of failing, which would force me to stay back. As a result, I was given a reading helper, known as Leap Frog to assist me in increasing my literacy skills. Ultimately, this lead to me improving my reading capabilities by being able to read books that are more advanced.  Also receiving an award for good writing and reading skills. Leap Frog was useful to me because I could put the pen over the word as many times as I wanted, especially if I did not understand the word. I utilized the Leap Frog twice a day. I utilized it once to assist me better with my homework, then a second time just for extra practice, which I completed on my own time.

Finally, after many hours of putting in work onto Leap Frog, it paid off. We had an English test and when the results were in, I scored higher than all of my other reading tests that I had ever taken. Once my teacher saw my test score, she was so proud of me. I even asked her for extra help even just to make sure I was on the right track. She knew I worked hard to reach my goal in passing the final English test. After this class, I knew I could improve my reading and writing abilities.

Then, when I entered the fifth grade, I had an obstacle to overcome which was reading new information and writing my first essay. It was something I needed my grandmother to help me on because she was sufficient at commenting on my work. My grandmother’s name was Barbara and she was the one person who pushed me to do the best I can do and not stop with just the bare minimum. My grandmother was a sweet woman, with beautiful bronzed skin, short gray hair who wore glasses. She had the most patience when it came to helping me with writing my essays in fifth grade. She sat down with me and broke everything down systematically, taking everything at a pace that I was comfortable with. After I took time out to get help from her, I was able to organize and articulate my ideas more clearly and make an accurate analysis of specific text. By then, it was time to write my first essay. I took advice from my grandmother who told me to take breaks between every couple of paragraphs so I would not become too frustrated or have writer’s block. I would usually become frustrated when writing because I could not get my point across clearly, or my grandmother would tell me it did not make any sense.

My grandma and I

I had a rough start first learning how to read and write because my mom did not really help me until after I did it myself first. Then she would provide her input. My mom, whose name is Karen, has light skin, wears glasses, and is about 5 feet and 5 inches tall. Even to this day, I know if I needed help, her first question would be “Did you even try?” On the other hand, she would say, “Baby you can do it,” meaning I barely received any assistance from her. My grandmother made me write words and sentences repeatedly to improve my writing. It was also to make sure I did not forget what I learned. After all, repetition is beneficial when it comes to memorizing information. Writing words down and reading, the words multiple times actually helped me remember words in order to understand them better. This was a way of studying for me when I learned new vocabulary words or even tried to keep my mind actively engaged.

Following the first essay, I wrote, I moved to the sixth grade, which brought me a new tool that would help me improve my reading and writing skills.  The tool was audio books. I first used audio books when I had to read the book Holes by Louis Sachar. The book is about a boy “Stanley who has bad luck and a curse is placed on his great-grandfather, he is sent to Camp Green Lake, a juvenile detention camp, for a crime he did not commit. Stanley and the other boys are forced to dig large holes in the dirt every day” (Sachar). The book was not too difficult but the audio book helped me focus a little more and understand it better. Additionally, listening to the audio helped me expand my vocabulary and understand the story line more easily. To this day, audio books help me read books that are on the difficult side or contain difficult words.

On the other hand, entering college made me realize how far I have come with my literacy. I have experienced two different English teachers, who have helped me with grammar and writing better essays. It really helped me because after I was corrected on some errors my essays became A’s. These teachers helped improve my grammar and my writing to a more college adequate level. After those classes, I have continued to expand my literacy. In this class, I expect to expand my reading especially with much more difficult text. Expanding my literacy in this class will prepare me for readings that are more difficult.

In the future, I plan to continue to expand my literacy. I will be successful in my career especially expanding my literacy to a more professional level. I have a couple more years to expand my literacy each day. Expanding my reading and writing skills will show how much I grew from the time I first started to learn how to read and write. Learning how to read and write made me realize how important it is to improve my skills. Being literate will always help you get through many things in life such as a job application, scholarships, and many more things. I personally think if you do not know how to read or write in modern society you will not be as successful compared to if you were literate. Being educated is the key to your dream job. As for me: a physical therapist and a photographer.
