Scene 2 Provocation

Inside of the interrogation room is Detective Morris and Mr. Doyle. Detective Morris starts to explain to Mr. Doyle that they are only detaining him until he tells her the information that she wants to know on Papa. That is all she is looking for from Mr. Doyle. Mr. Doyle does not say anything to Detective Morris. So, Detective Morris starts reading all the information that she has on Mr. Doyle. She tells him about his job, what his wife does for a living, and then states that he has a daughter in junior college at Illinois State. Detective Morris then tells Mr. Doyle that it is a big expense to pay for in-world college. Detective Morris then says that most student are going to college online in the Nether. Then, Detective Morris bribes Mr. Doyle by saying that he can keep this entire story of who he is intact and he can also have this job at UMC if Mr. Doyle tells Detective Morris what she wants to know about Papa. Mr. Doyle is only concerned about wither or not he can keep Iris. Detective Morris says that one they have the information they need, the life of the Nether is over. So, with that, Mr. Doyle tells Detective Morris that he has nothing to say. (Haley, 9-10)

Do you think Mr. Doyle is making the right decision by not telling Detective Morris what she wants to know or do you feel that he should just tell her so he can keep his life intact and come out of this with the new job offer?

  1. As someone who has seen the full play, I believe Mr. Doyle is making the wrong decision, but just for these 7 scenes he’s making the right decision. Mr. Doyle feels that this is a way to get away from real world issues, because the virtual world lets him be who he wants to be. He enjoys the virtual world, but he has some issues within. I still believe he’s making the right decision, and living his life how he wants. He believes it’s a safety, comfort zone for him.

  2. I do think that Mr. Doyle most likely doesn’t want to give out any information to stop himself from getting into trouble. So far there’s no way to know if he is going to let Morris threatening him bother him. He may be scared of getting into trouble by revealing information. On the other hand, I think that if detective Morris brought Iris into the conversation, he would have a lot to say. Mr. Doyle seems to care a lot about Iris, just like Papa.

  3. No i do not think he should just tell her. He made the choice to create an anonymous account on a virtual world. He is not breaking any laws, or committing any crimes. So why should he answer questions that he does not want to answer? His anonymous world would not be so anonymous. I feel as though he has the right to his privacy, and it should not be invaded just to make someone else happy.

  4. I think that he should tell her what she needs to know because if Detective Morris finds out from someone else and make it worse for Mr. Doyle

  5. I think Doyle should of told Morris the truth because it could of preserved the life he had without causing any drama. The hard part is that Doyle enjoyed who he was and what he did inside the Nether so there was no way he was going to give any information up when he really should have tisane himself.

  6. Though, I believe Morris is just as guilty as Sims, Morris probably had no intention of falling for Iris/Doyle. I don’t believe Doyle is making the right decision because he has a life and it is actually sad that he would have his wife and daughter secondary to something that isn’t completely real to be in the Nether with Sims, who refuses to show real affection for Iris/Doyle.
