A shift in Control

We see in chapter 11 that androids have taken over an office building and have started a fake police operation. Even with Rick and Resch knowing Garland is an android, they don’t execute him immediately. Garland is able to get the drop on Rick and but ultimately gets shot in the head. Resch can’t get over that “For three years I’ve been working under the direction of androids” (Dick 137). Really Resch is just overthinking the idea because Rick tells him that “According to Garland, a bunch of them came to earth together and that it’s only been three months” (Dick 137). Later in chapter 13 when Pris is telling Isidore that more androids are coming to earth, it’s telling me that the androids will be able to outsmart the humans by blending in with them. We see that it’s starting to become more difficult for the bounty hunters to do their jobs.

With the androids showing more human like characteristics, do you think we will see Rick move further away from his duties, and if so what will be his next chapter? Also what is the possibility that the androids will come together and plan some sort of extreme plan against the humans?

  1. I believe we will see Rick move further away from his duties because even when he retired Luba Luft he felt bad about it. Therefore, if more androids come down to earth showing even more human like characteristics, I believe killing the androids will eventually get to him. It will get too hard for him to complete due to his sympathy for them. I feel if he does run away from his duties, it will have a negative impact on him. Also, if more androids come down to earth, I do feel like they will be more advanced and be able to blend in with the humans as well. This would mean chaos on earth and a harder time for Rick to kill them. In addition, there is a chance that they will have a plan against the humans to take over earth since a bunch may come together. Also, since it seems like Rick is having a hard time killing the androids, other hunters may too. This may mean that killing the androids will be even harder and with more coming, it may be impossible to complete the bounty job.

  2. There is a possibility that Rick will move further away from his duties as a bounty hunter. Rick first reconsiders his job in chapter 12 after he and Phil Resch “retire” android Luba Luft, he feels guilty about what he has done considering the fact that Luba has not committed any crimes nor harmed any humans. Rick extends on his thoughts when he says, “I’m getting out of this business” (Dick 136). Furthermore, Rick describes Luba when he says, “I don’t get it; how can a talent like that be a liability to our society? But it wasn’t the talent, he told himself; it was she herself” (Dick 137). Both of these thoughts from Rick could mean that he is changing his views on androids; he may take into account the fact that some androids may just want to live out their lives innocently and as human beings.
There may be androids that want to come to earth and plot to take over the humans. However, so far within the book, most androids just want to live out their lives innocently and to escape their lives on Mars. An example of this would be in chapter 13 when Pris describes life on Mars to Isidore, her view is very different from the views of humans that have moved to Mars. Pris describes her thoughts as “We came back, because nobody should have to live there. It wasn’t conceived for habituation, at least not within the last billion years. It’s so old. You feel it in the stones, the terrible old age” (Dick 150). Furthermore, early in the novel, humans that moved to Mars were given android servants in exchange for their cooperation.
