Publishing consultant research assistant: Internship

Fighting against diabetes: internship

First blood

Created by Autumn Bryant, Hannah Humphries, Dawn Lucas, Jen Pickett, David Warner, and Roni White, First Blood is a third-person action and adventure game. A similar concept as to The Last of Us and Dishonored, First Blood is about Brielle, who is proficient in crafting technology, and must use her talented skills to save humanity from the plagues of Egypt, while trying to survive and keep her younger brother, Jax, safe. Brielle is very strong minded, yet selfish, because she strives to keep her brother, her only family left, safe from the plague.
The story begins with Brielle and Jax having to survive on their own without their parents, who they no longer have to watch over them. They live among the lower class of society, while the upper class believe they can use their wealth to survive during the plague. As the story continues, the plague begins to infect a majority of the population, including the upper class, and Brielle fights the plague while also helping others along the way to set a good example for her younger brother.
This video game faces many obstacles and teaches players when it is the wrong and right times to be selfish in a world full of hate and challenges.

2020 global game jam

Description: Global Game Jam is an international weekend event where people from around the world collaborate with each other to develop a game. The structure of the event is usually that everyone gathers on late Friday evening to watch a short keynote video that gives advice from leading game developers and reveals the overall theme for the weekend. For 2020, Professor Nyland’s ENG 225: Writing Video Games and Other Interactive Stories class watched a video that included images of long lost friends finding each other, someone finding a needle in a haystack, and lost animals being guided home. By the end of the video, the theme was revealed to be Lost and Found. Over the weekend the English students were divided into teams and given 48 hours to create a game that relates to the yearly events theme. Each team has developed a game that presents different takes on what Lost and Found means to them.

Project Description: A group of Stevenson students in English 225 (Topics in Creative Writing) traveled to London, England where they practiced writing through their experiences on the trip. Based on the sights, smells, and feelings of London, these students were able to create English pieces! In addition to writing, the students observed the people, places, travel, cultural differences, parks, food, and literature in the city. Following their visit, this group of students created a website dedicated to their experiences. Each student also included personal blogs from the excursion to expand on their experiences as individuals. An itinerary with pictures and descriptions caps off this website highlighting a life changing international journey.

The Joker

Project Description: A group of Stevenson students in English 281 (Modern Adaptions) created a website dedicated to the numerous adaptations of the famous comic book villain, Joker. The site includes articles on the various different adaptations from movies to TV shows and even a theme park ride. The different characteristics, visual looks, and time periods are all evaluated in one big epic comparison! We see the character’s adaption journey from more comical and ridiculous, to dark and disturbing now in the present. Poetry and artwork based on the Joker are even featured. This project showcases a well designed website combined with writing and visuals to showcase the various versions of a fan-favorite character.

Beyond the Horizon by n Nguyen

Beyond the Horizon is a Visual Novel video game created by N Nguyen. The story follows Cyrus, a senior student at the Kingdom of Sirius’ Royal Academy, and their last days of school before graduating and becoming a part of the Kingdom Army. Programming, writing, and art were all done by the student.
As you read through, you are able to select certain dialogue, and each dialogue receives a different outcome from the other characters. Your choices effect the ultimate outcomes of all of the characters.
