Visual Rhetorical Analysis of The Villager Website

Affordances:

The website overall isn’t very interactive. It features mostly buttons that redirect the visitor to a new page. The only interactive features are the search bar and the article gallery on the homepage. There are some buttons that are distinctly designed as buttons including “Read More” and “View Category.” The author’s name in articles kin underlined and in a different font, so the visitor can tell the name can redirect to a page about the author.

Color:

The Stevenson Villager is easy to read because of the colors selected. Most of the site has black type on a white background, which is an optimal combination for reading lengthy text on a digital platform. On the top left on every page is the green Stevenson Villager logo. The only other forms of color come from photographs. Overall, the color choices, while easy to read, are very boring and plain, leaving the site visitor disinterested.

Font Choice:

The font and typeface choices for the Stevenson Villager work well for an online student-run newspaper. Almost all text on the homepage is in upper case font, except for the body of the articles, which is in sentence case. The “Recent Posts” on the side navigation bar should be in title case. Article titles, authors, article categories, publish dates, and more are in upper case. Too many elements are in uppercase, and a few elements do not have good tracking. The choices of typeface work well together. There is never more than 3 typefaces on the same webpage.

Layout:

The layout is very easy to follow. There is a top navigation bar and a side navigation bar that allow visitors to explore the website easily. The layout follows a simple grid design. Most sections are separated with space or with solid black lines. Some of the lines create too boxy of a feeling. The side navigation bar includes too many grey lines in between items, which makes the section too busy. Overall, the layout makes the website easy to navigate, but the extra elements make the website appear too busy and boxy.

Life is Bad…But it Could be Worse: College Meme

“If Britney Can Make It Through 2007, I Can Make It Through This Semester”

https://memesbams.com/college-memes/

I really love this meme because it is Britney in what I think was her prime. Even though her life was a mess her music was absolute fuego around this time. Which brings me into why I can relate to this meme. As a college senior I have been through the good, bad, ugly, and flat our horrendous. Each year get to that point in the semester when I am officially over everything, but there’s still time left and I can’t give up just yet. when I am down on my luck and everything is going left, what always gets me going is comparing my bad situation to something that could be worse. “I failed an exam and now I have two weeks to come back from that I don’t think I can do it” my response to myself could be “Well it could be worse, you could be failing and have to take the class again next semester.” I know it sounds so bad and so negative, but two negatives creates a positive, which in my scenarios equals hope and motivation. Whenever I reach that point where my life is in shambles, I channel my inner ’07 and come out of the tunnel victorious. #youwantapieceofme #strongerthanyesterday

“Me in a Group Project.” Memedroid, www.memedroid.com/memes/detail/2723926/Lel.

I feel like this really depicts part of my college experience. As a business communication major I am in classes that tend to do a lot of group projects. Every time I hear we have a group project I get worried because typically I am the person in the meme. Last semester this meme was the most relatable it has ever been. I am someone who always wants to do well and do the best that I can. When it comes to group projects where no one is taking the initiative I tend to step up because I know that it will effect my group’s grade and ultimately my grade. I might even feel this way again this semester, as I have already been assigned a group for the entire semester and we have two projects to complete together. Hopefully it goes better than last semester.

College Meme

This meme depicts my journey throughout college pretty well. Growing up when i was first looking for colleges, I was greatly worried about how I had to go take out loans and accrue debt to get an education. Though I personally did well in school, this is the approach I often took when addressing admissions counselors. Currently in college, I find myself still doing the same approach as I gear up for a career in education as I explore potential graduate schools and programs to prepare for another financial burden to increase my education. As my GPA grows each year, I basically finding myself relating to this meme portraying me with similarities to this meme.

Exam College Meme

“Hela College Exams.” Meme. Accessed Jan. 2020. https://www.reddit.com/r/CollegeMemes/comments/ekcp77/not_mine_just_passing_along/

Although this meme is not entirely accurate, it does hold some truth in relation to my college experience. Last semester, one of my classes had the lecture start a very early time three days a week. I usually attended the lecture, but towards the end of last semester I began frequently missing the lectures. This caused me to have to buckle down and study hard the day before the exam. I did end up doing well, but it wouldn’t have been possible if I didn’t attend the in-class exam review. I also ended up putting together a review and studying with classmates. I would not recommend this at all, as it was only possible because of the hours and hours of work I put in to learn the material. It is certainly possible, but I have no plans on repeating those actions. Keeping up with the material is a lot less work and stress in the long run.

College Life Meme

“Elementary vs College.” Meme. Accessed Jan. 2020. https://meme.xyz/meme/1711&nomobileview=1

I believe that this meme does describe some aspects of my college life. When I first started college, I knew that it would be completely different from high school. I especially knew that the expectations in college would be different from what I experienced so far. Although there are some parts of college that can be difficult such as managing your time wisely, I don’t think college is as bad as the meme depicts it to be. However, I do agree that compared to elementary school, college is much harder. In elementary school, as a kid, you don’t have as many responsibilities as an adult in college.  As the meme displays, there is a sort of naive innocence in elementary students, whereas college students just want their “suffering” to end.

Relatable Meme About College

“Me a naturally smart college student having to study for the first time realizing I have no idea how.” Twitter. Accessed Jan 28, 2020. https://twitter.com/skinny_que/status/1175799837901676545?s=21

This particular meme is one that I resonate with. I was the type of student that never had to study for any of my classes and would ace every test. The most I would do was read over my notes or rewrite them. I was in the International Baccalaureate Program in my Junior and Senior year of high school and the only subject I reviewed frequently for was Spanish. The first time that I “studied” was spring semester of my Freshman year of college for Microbiology. A few classmates and I had study sessions but I would just read over the unit objectives and the material and ace the test (which is what I’ve always done). It wasn’t until I took anatomy last semester and realized that my no studying streak would fail me. Anatomy is one of those courses that you absolutely need to study for because there is so much information to learn in a short amount of time. I had to scramble to try out different techniques of studying only to find out what worked for me at the end of the semester. I ended up failing the class, having to retake it this semester and be a year behind in my nursing degree. All in all, this meme connects with me on a deep level.

136 Hilarious Posts About College That Will Make You Laugh, Then Cry

This post reminds me of every group project I had with in these pass four years. Especially my last semester, I had about 3 group projects. All of those group projects I did all the group work. I only did it because I knew my grade depended on it. If you were to ask me what those assignments were on, I could not be able to tell you. Do not get me wrong, I have had good groups in the past who were all very responsible. But the bad tends to stick out more than the good.

College Life: Fuck this Shit

“Fuck this shit, just kidding I need to pass.” https://memesbams.com/college-memes/

I chose this meme because I feel that it accurately reflects my college experience. Sometimes, in college when assignments get difficult, or they aren’t explained well by professors it can be frustrating. And that frustration can lead to you wanting to quit or give up. I have literally been in this same position as the man in the comics, throwing papers to the ground in anger ready to just give up and say “fuck it, I don’t even care anymore.” Only to come rushing back to the assignment moments later because I need to get a good grade and I don’t want to fail. Because, if I fail, then I have to repeat the class, and potentially stay in college longer, which I really don’t want to do. Like, I really, don’t want to do.

This post depicts my college experience at Stevenson University. So often during research, I will find a site that I want to use in research and then find out that it is unreliable. I have often heard professors tell people that Wikipedia is not a reliable source. When I saw this image it reminded me of many professors’ classes. As a teacher candidate myself, I have come to find that Wikipedia is not reliable when students have questions about the information. Therefore, it was an accurate depiction of Stevenson student and teacher life, as well as an accurate depiction of how unreliable a source can be if anybody can change information or add it to a source. Nobody wants to rely on a site that can be changed and added to by strangers. The people that are manipulating the site may not be experts on the matter being discussed on the page. I for one have told to be cautious because one should not rely on an unscholarly, unverifiable source when they are working hard to compile their work that will go towards their degree.
