Reflection on Eurydice

The play Eurydice is about a couple who get married but on the same night of their wedding, the wife is killed and is taken into the Underworld. There she meets her father who died awhile ago as well as the three stones who live among the dead.  Orpheus, the husband, is distraught with sadness and sets out to find his wife, Eurydice. He eventually finds her and  charms the gods with music and begs them to let him take her back with him to the land of the living. Eurydice agrees to this but unfortunately they do not make it out. Orpheus is overcome with grief and Eurydice remains in the Underworld forever. From this play, I learned that sometimes trust is all you have. Both Eurydice and Orpheus would have made out of the Underworld if Orpheus trusted that Eurydice was behind him. If he had just waited a little longer, they would not have ended up apart forever in the end of the play. Orpheus should have used trust and assurance to guide him out of the Underworld.

Stevenson’s theatre and media performance of Eurydice was intriguing, entertaining, and funny. I think that overall the performance was a great portrayal of Sarah Ruhl’s play. The sets, characters, and acting were all stunning. Although simple, the sets fit the play allowing for quick setting or costume changes. The background music also helped shape the play by making it more dramatic and suspenseful. The characters were also very prepared and knew their lines as well as their character’s emotions or feeling by heart. They seemed to have prepared for their performance extensively. In particular, the main character Eurydice played by Elli Bender stood out to me. I found it amazing how she was able to portray I happy new wed to a confused daughter who has lost her memories. It was also impressive as to how both actors Liv Dinter and Tiffany Ko were able to play two characters in one play portraying both perfectly. This acting was fascinating since they are all underclassman. When reading the company biographies, I was shocked to learn this because all of the actors seems so experienced.
