Visiting Writer

Carlos Hernandez strikes me as the kind of person who I would love to spend a weekend talking to. He had an amazing amount to say about a field that I find particularly interesting. The fact that he wrote the poem he used as his intro in a few days is amazing to me (poems are not my area of expertise or interest but I do understand their appeal). His willingness to divulge information on subjects that are not always talked about in the writing community was surprising yet appreciated.  While I agree with his statement that now is the perfect time for someone like myself to expand into digital publishing, I am of the opinion that we should never get rid of traditional print media. Call me crazy, but I don’t trust that media that is connected to the internet to remain exactly the same. Aside from that I really enjoyed getting to talk to Mr. Hernandez and wish I had more time to talk with him.

For 2/26/19

Carlos Hernandez is a writer/author who has created work that is made up of science fiction and fantasy. Many of his writings are poems, short stories, or novels like his most recent, Sal and Gabi Break the Universe. On the 26th of February, Hernandez came in for a discussion as well as a close read of two chapters from his new book that is expected to come out on March 5th.

After listening to Carlos Hernandez discuss his book and speaking to us about his writing experience, I’ve learned a few things. It’s good to fail many times when trying to write a great piece. The more you fail, the more you learn from your mistakes and become a better writer. It takes so much practice to write a good piece, especially since it’s a good idea to have others review it and critique your work. Most importantly, everything you have a passion for does not always have to be done for money. If you hardly get any money from publishing a novel, don’t get discouraged. If you truly love doing it money should not get in the way of doing what you love.

Carlos Hernandez

From my experience from hearing Carlos Hernandez talk about the world of digital media. He’s a smart educated Cuban American who has a background in various aspects of Hispanic culture and Americanized culture. Listening to him speak he’s a very knowledgable man. He introduced himself with a portion of his poem about his abuela. His poems are more than words to him they are closely related to the aspects of his life. He is very knowledgable on digital media. He said when it comes to managing white space on a regular page it can be very costly and expensive to produce because you have to worry about the white space that is taking up the page. Compared to producing works in the digital field you don’t have to worry about that aspect. With his long poem, he showed it was a lot of white space on the right hand of the page. He said that was less costly when to price because it doesn’t cost much produce work digitally.

Another aspect that was very interesting to hear was the thought of being published. He said, “You get better by getting rejected. By producing work and submitting it to the major publishing companies that’s the only way you can get better. I believe that’s very interesting to hear because with your work the only way to get better is to be rejected. So by getting your getting your work out now, you can eventually get the opportunity that you were looking for. Listening to him was very interesting and intriguing to hear.
