STEM for LIRS

For my grant idea I want to be able to work with LIRS because from their website they do not have many extra curricular for the refugees. My idea is to find out more about if they have a computers and potentially put software on the computers and implement a STEM program. Technology is the way of the world and it is a great skill for these refugees to learn and could potentially help them find employment. Stevenson University students from any of the sciences, CIS, or math department can help these refugees learn some of these different programs. Not only would it be super beneficial to the refugees but also to the Stevenson University students by allowing them to give their time into helping others who have the potential to succeed, they just need the resources.  Details on budget and more info will be determined once connecting with LIRS to find out what resources they already have. I think that this would be a great grant that would be extremely helpful and be a great service learning task for Stevenson Students.

  1. I think this is a winning idea because Information technology is a field that will never go out of business. By teaching the refugees something with I.T. it’ll help them sustain a job. This appeals me alot because I am a computer information systems student and would like to implement this. The role I would like to play in this is the Finance Director. I would like to be in control of the budget and spending.

  2. I think this is a winning idea because technology is so prominent and will continue to rapidly grow in today’s age. It is important for refugees especially to get involved in STEM because this could provide future jobs. Jobs are constantly searching for those who are familiar with technology related experience due to the growth of the internet and social media. So whether or not refugees potentially go into STEM, they will still be experienced with technology in a way that could provide future opportunities. I think this is a great idea and I could help by being the Communications Specialist. Since I am a Business Communication major, I can provide communication aspects to this project such as creating the initial relationship with STEM programs and the LIRS.
