AWE Grant Pitch

I have chosen the Asylee Women’s Enterprise as the organization that I would like to focus on for my grant proposal. For my proposal, I would like to collect book bags and fill them with educational and fun items for children. This would provide them with something to take home and further their learning.

The money could be used to purchase the book bags and items to fill such as books, coloring, stuffed animals or other items. I would like to have an event on campus where students come to stuff the book bags and prepare them. The event could be held in Rockland Banquet and the items would be pre-purchased. While the students stuff the bags, AWE could have speakers, asylum seekers or representatives speak to us and educate the students. This way, students could learn about who they are helping and questions. If funds allow, food could even be provided for this event. I think this would be a great way to physically help AWE and educate students who are on campus. If we are able to properly market this event, we could have a great student turn out.

Grant Proposal

For my grant proposal, I would like to set up a 5k walk/run for LIRS. I was recently involved in a 5k walk for the Hydrocephalus Association which included the walk itself along with tables set up for crafts, food, people from the organization to talk about hydrocephalus, toys and games, etc. LIRS could work together with Stevenson and host a 5k walk/run at the Greenspring campus where the cross country track is. People that attend from LIRS could give those attending the event more information about the organization. Those who volunteer to walk/run in this event could donate to the organization. This 5k walk/run would not only bring awareness about LIRS to others, but also donations from those volunteering in the event to help the nonprofit.

Grant Proposal

For my grant proposal, I would like to host a community farmers market. The objective of this event is to raise money for the refugees at the Esperanza Center. The event will be held in Baltimore MD and will be open for all Maryland residents. The farmers market will consist of:
Local vendors
Live entertainment
Food and Drinks
Moon bounces
Games
The objective of this event is to allow refugees to build relationships with community members and share their stories and talents. The community will raise money for the refugees through payment of entry, payment for food, and donations from local vendors. This event will help fund more assets for the Esperanza Center and expose the community to the lives of refugees.

Esperanza Center Grant Proposal

As many of you may know, the Esperanza Center’s headquarters recently suffered extensive damage from a neighboring fire accident. The Center had to relocate down the street and they are unaware of how long this building will act as a temporary solution. In the meantime, the center is in the process of redesigning the space to adequately provide their various services including a primary care health clinic, English as second language classes, translation services, employment, and food assistance and more. The center could function more efficiently if they had to proper tools available. If selected, this proposal could greatly benefit the Esperanza Center get back on their feet and provide optimal services for the Baltimore community.

Asylum Seekers Awareness Panel

A panelist of different asylum leaders will come in, answer a series of question, provide factual information on asylum seekers, and educate people on the importance of having asylums and the impact that their organization has made in their community. All of the stevenson community is welcomed, but guest from all around are highly recommended as well. This event will also have food. The following day, stevenson will provide shuttle transportation to those interested in visiting and volunteering at an asylum.

Grant Proposal

I have chosen AWE for my grant proposal because after researching, I came across how AWE offers ESL classes to help asylum seekers learn English. I would imagine that ESL classes are mundane and difficult because English is such a hard language to master, and AWE stated that language barriers make it difficult for immigrants to navigate the few resources available to them in Baltimore. I propose that we use the grant money to help fund boardgames that help them better understand the English language like Scrabble, Apples to Apples, Taboo, etc. Additionally, adding books to a small library for AWE to offer, if they do not already have one, and supply it with American classics like To Kill a Mockingbird, The Great Gatsby, and Of Mice and Men, just to name a few, which can be for those who are more advanced in the English language. Having American board games and books can help them adapt to US culture and lifestyle. Additionally, AWE stated that the immigrants do not like an individualistic society since most women from Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East are from collectivist societies, so I propose that Stevenson groups from different majors and clubs (and maybe even willing high school students from around the area who are looking for service hours and are interested in helping AWE) can come to volunteer a few hours and play the boardgames with the immigrants. This will allow them to better integrate as individuals into the US, especially if the immigrants are younger because they might appreciate being around others their own age and make new friends. This idea is sustainable and does not require monthly fees.

Grant Pitch

I would pitch an event with the asylum and immigration services such as LIRS to come to stevenson and give short speeches about what they do at their organizations. We would also have them invite people they work with to come and share their stories. This event would resemeble the ideas a ted talk platform. Along with these talks people from the community would be asked to bring donations with them to offer families such as clothing, food, and books. This drive would encourage members of the Stevenson and Owings Mills community to become invloved with these organizations as volunteers as well as learning about the organizations and services they provide.

Panel at Stevenson

For my grant idea, I propose we host a panel with LIRS (or really any one of the organizations that we decide to connect with) where we would have 6-8 people who are immigrants, refugees, or asylum seekers, speak. They would have a conversation about what the organization has done for them and how students or anyone attending could support financially or help volunteer. It could all be student led too. I’m thinking we just recreate the Entrepreneur Panel we attended last week.

Grant Idea

I had trouble choosing between the two, but I would like to have a run/walk to raise money for technology and awareness or a conference. At Stevenson, we have this event called Leaderstang which takes students through a variety of sessions on finance, mental outlook, work skills, and more to become better leaders. I think this event would work great tailored to AWE. This event will be a great opportunity to help the women of AWE with leadership skills and preparation for the work field. I also feel we could have a child version that focuses on learning and possible mentorship.

Elevator Pitch Grant Idea

I believe that there is a need for immigrants and refugees to make a better life here in America, by obtaining good paying jobs. This is why I would like to team up with the non profit organization, “Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service”, so that we can get a fashion stylist that specializes in nice, affordable, professional clothes. Having a stylist that specializes in business clothes would help immigrants boost their confidence to feel like they can grab any position they want in an interview. 1,500 dollars can go a long way with obtaining stylists and affordable business wear. This organization already has a lot of power to have this coordinated easily, by recently making Krish O’Mara, former policy director of Michelle Obama, being president and chief executive officer. Give millions of jobless immigrants a chance of a future in America, by making them feel confident and professional with new business clothes for their interviews.
