The Migrant Caravan is a Facade: They’re Criminals

Immigration has been a constant topic over the last few years, heightened by the Trump administration. The administration has been known to oppose immigration primarily those coming from predominately POC countries. Greg Norman’s article on the migrant caravan highlighted the demographics of the thousands of refugees and asylum seekers, primarily the criminals among the group. Norman emphasized the negative aspects of the caravan stating, “More than 500 criminals are traveling with the migrant caravan that’s massed on the other side of the San Diego border” (Norman). He added that the majority of the group consisted of young adult males that made women and children the face of the caravan to gain sympathy.

Fox News has a reputation of being the main news source for right-wing Americans. The article gave little insight on the migrants and their reason for travelling thousands of miles, but instead, his main focus sympathized those that shared anti-immigrant sentiments.

His word choice throughout the article contained subliminal meanings that supports stricter regulations for incoming refugees and asylum seekers. Norman only used locals that are against the caravan, including the Tijuana Mayor which called the incoming influx of migrants as “bums” and included local protests against the caravan. Images of Tijuana locals demonstrating with signs that read “Let’s Save Tijuana, no more caravans” and quotes that painted the migrants as searching for free handouts from the government.

The article empowers anti-immigration groups, especially right-wing Americans by only focusing on the locals affected, overlooking the reasons why the caravan formed in the first place.
