Provocation Papa/Sims and his problem with feelings.

In Scene 7, Morris and Sims are in the Interrogation room and Sims is battling Morris’ badgering of the Nether and it’s content with a logic that makes sense, but is morally wrong. He brings up the fact that pornography drives technology and the Nether is a private place for fulfilling your fantasy or imagination.
Later in scene 10, he says that Iris should not become close with Woodnut because it would upset the balance of things.

From these two pieces of evidence, I concluded that Sims/Papa had feelings for the inspiration for Iris, however his imagination and fascination was perverted and when he tried to act on them, his feelings got in the way and he stopped. As crazy as it sounds, I believe Sims wants a world where people are allowed to have the entire experience through the power of virtual reality or the Nether without it being completely real. My question is Sims a protagonist or antagonist, or does Morris evoke that from him and cause him to be more despicable to the reader or viewer of the Nether.

Provocation Scene 11

Scene eleven begins in the interrogation room with Sims and Morris. In this scene, to me it became rather intense especially at the beginning. Morris attempts to get Sims to reveal where his server is located and describes what is actually happening in the Hideaway. Basically, a plethora of girls all looking alike are represented behind someone no matter who they are. They are allowed to get close with people; however, they cannot become emotionally attached or they are sent to boarding school. The guests are only allowed to choose through a variety of appearances. Sims is the creator so he controls everything of this world from the music to the how anything else appears. Morris describes the music that the users dance to as “dancing to his nightmare” (Morris, 47). In order for Morris to tell Sims what happened to Iris, Morris demands Sims to tell her where his server is located once again. Morris slips up and reveals that Sims looks the same as his person in the Hideway. Sims finds out Morris is a member of the Hideaway.

Is Morris just as guilty as Sims since she earnestly participated in the Hideaway as well? What legitimate intentions did she have behind joining the Hideaway? Is she trying to get Sims to directly confess by incorporating herself with the Hideaway?

Scene 2 Provocation

Inside of the interrogation room is Detective Morris and Mr. Doyle. Detective Morris starts to explain to Mr. Doyle that they are only detaining him until he tells her the information that she wants to know on Papa. That is all she is looking for from Mr. Doyle. Mr. Doyle does not say anything to Detective Morris. So, Detective Morris starts reading all the information that she has on Mr. Doyle. She tells him about his job, what his wife does for a living, and then states that he has a daughter in junior college at Illinois State. Detective Morris then tells Mr. Doyle that it is a big expense to pay for in-world college. Detective Morris then says that most student are going to college online in the Nether. Then, Detective Morris bribes Mr. Doyle by saying that he can keep this entire story of who he is intact and he can also have this job at UMC if Mr. Doyle tells Detective Morris what she wants to know about Papa. Mr. Doyle is only concerned about wither or not he can keep Iris. Detective Morris says that one they have the information they need, the life of the Nether is over. So, with that, Mr. Doyle tells Detective Morris that he has nothing to say. (Haley, 9-10)

Do you think Mr. Doyle is making the right decision by not telling Detective Morris what she wants to know or do you feel that he should just tell her so he can keep his life intact and come out of this with the new job offer?

“The Nether” Review.

The production starts off with a man named Mr. Sims later known as “Papa” being interrogated by a person known as Detective Morris. Detective Morris is interrogating him about a virtual world he created so people and him self could live out their fantasies and desires that are not excepted in his world. Mr. Sims expressed how he has the argue to mess with little girls and created the virtual world so that he would not take his argues out on a real little girl. Detective Morris was trying to get him to understand how it was still morally wrong to imagine things like that and something bad had to happen in real life to start the whole process. Later on in the play we found out Detective Morris was not getting her inside information from an agent she was the agent. She created an account and end up falling in love with the whole concept of the virtual world. In the midst of it all we found out why Detective Morris was so emotionally involved in the “investigation” it was because as a child her father did not show her any attention and she could not understand why, she longed for his affection and never got it. so when he died he left her his login and she then saw why.

Even though this play was mentally disturbing, it was very interesting. shows that sometimes virtual worlds can help with the desire and temptation of morally wrong urges a person might have.

The Nether Review

The play, The Nether, was a comparison between the real world and virtual reality. The people in the real world can create a new character that they want to be in the virtual reality. There are no consequences in the virtual reality, but in the real world there are. There is one person in the virtual reality world that they refer to as the main character. A detective is investigating what is going on in the virtual reality by interviewing the actual person who is the main character.

I thought the overall performance of the play was interesting and was done well. I thought it was neat to see how they shift back and forth between the two worlds by using special sound effects. Also, it was interesting to see how the people in the real world had a different character in the virtual reality world.

I would not suggest any improvements because the entire play was good. The actors performed well in showing who their characters really were. The play also effectively presented lighting and sound effects to show which world the characters were in. The play was very organized, clear, and easy to understand.

Review: The Nether

The play “The Nether” was about a virtual reality world that you could escape into to avoid the everyday challenges of life.  It was both positive and negative depending on your perspective on it.  The play took a darker tone as it progressed.  In the beginning a man is being questioned for his activity on the Nether, which is basically a interactive Internet.  In the Nether, there is police just like there would be in everyday life and they monitor everyones actions.  This man was being accused of sexual child abuse in his realm of the Nether.  These police sent in a uncover agent to check this out and he finds himself in a struggle between right and wrong.  Not only does he experience the full aspects of this horrible of place, but he finds out the identity of the child who is being abused, its a older man. This man found peace inside this part of the nether oddly enough and when his identity was revealed, he took his own life concluding the play.

Although the play was one of the more darker plays I have ever seen, there still was some pretty enjoyable parts.  I enjoyed the middle of the play the most.  The characters really had me thinking how this play could possible end.  It was enjoyable for me to have to put the story line together like a puzzle.  In general, I think the cast did a excellent job.  Its must of taken countless hours to perfect the roles of the main characters and to be able to turn such a delicate subject into a flawless performance.  I really enjoyed the majority of this play despite its dark nature towards children.

Its hard to come up with anything to do different or correct about this play, but I only noticed one thing in general that could be changed.  In the play had a bit of a back story in what the situation of the nether was, it would of helped me to understand the play a bit more in the beginning because at times I was confused as to what was going on.  Many of us that came to see it had not read the book, so if in anyway any more background could have been added within the play that could of helped.

“The Nether” by Jennifer Haley, was directed by Linda Chambers at Stevenson University. I heard about this play last semester in Theater 103 and I started to get interested. When I came into English 151 and heard we were reading the play and had to see it; I was ecstatic. I ordered my tickets when they went on sale for Thursday, March 2, 2017. As I got my tickets I felt my excitement grow.

As I entered the BlackBox on Greenspring, I felt a little uncomfortable, but still excited. Once the play started, I watched as two characters, an investigator and a offender, talk about what the offender did. My excitement grew when I heard some Criminal Justice terms thrown into the dialogue. My attention was focused mainly on what was going on. I got a little confused on what was going on, and why Mr. Doyle was acting so attached to “Papa”. As I continued to watch, I started to understand the plot and character similarities. I really enjoyed the twist at the end, and how there was love. I liked how it went from “real world” to virtual reality. I felt a lot of sympathy for each of the characters. I feel like the play taught the audience that never judge someone’s true feelings, and always keep an open mind.

Although I really enjoyed the play, I did have some dislikes. I did not like where the play was placed. That’s why I was uncomfortable. It was too small of a space and crowded. I wish they would’ve placed it somewhere differently. I did not like how some of the scenes were a little hard to have a visual, and there should’ve been more props.

Overall the play was great! I enjoyed how the actors got into character.  I felt it was surreal, accurate, intense, and creepy. It got into topics of pedophilia which are accurate in the real world, and it got creepy at times. It was intense because you wanted to know what was going on at all times, and it was surreal because this virtual world of “The Nether” could happen in the future. As a result of all of this, I would enjoy seeing it again, but in a more comfortable space.

“The Nether”

When I first read the short description of what the book was about on the back cover of the book I was not interested at all. So, my mind set about this play was not very good when walking in. It took a little while for me to understand what was going on but as the play continued, I really started to enjoy the play. The play was about this man that had created this virtual universe for people to go to and  explore their feelings and explore things that society says is wrong but is OK to do in this virtual world. This man that created this virtual universe is now being investigated because some actions in this universe are considered “illegal” by the government in actual reality. The play continues to switch between the room where the investigation is being held and this virtual universe. there was another character that was being investigated also but he was being investigated for information about the one they call “Papa” in this virtual universe. The man being investigated for information about “Papa” ends up committing suicide because in the virtual universe Papa told him that he could not stay forever and that he does not love him.

There were a few things that could of been better with the play. I went on Friday night and I heard that the rest of the shows were sold out. The play could of been on the main stage instead of the little room, which would allow for more people to come and it would of been a more comfortable experience for the audience. Also, they could have done more with the set. In the play they described what the girls room looked like and things like that. They could have tried to create that room with other props.

The play was done very well. I thought that the actors did a very good job bringing these characters to life. The change between scenes was done very well. The music that went along with the scene change was very good. The lights we done very good. There was just enough light to see the actors and the set but not to much light to loose the effect of the place they were in.
