Provocation Papa/Sims and his problem with feelings.

In Scene 7, Morris and Sims are in the Interrogation room and Sims is battling Morris’ badgering of the Nether and it’s content with a logic that makes sense, but is morally wrong. He brings up the fact that pornography drives technology and the Nether is a private place for fulfilling your fantasy or imagination.
Later in scene 10, he says that Iris should not become close with Woodnut because it would upset the balance of things.

From these two pieces of evidence, I concluded that Sims/Papa had feelings for the inspiration for Iris, however his imagination and fascination was perverted and when he tried to act on them, his feelings got in the way and he stopped. As crazy as it sounds, I believe Sims wants a world where people are allowed to have the entire experience through the power of virtual reality or the Nether without it being completely real. My question is Sims a protagonist or antagonist, or does Morris evoke that from him and cause him to be more despicable to the reader or viewer of the Nether.

Scene 12 Provocation

Within scene 14, Papa and Woodnut are conversing within the hideaway about Woodnut’s infatuation towards Iris. Papa advises him to not get attached as it seems that Woodnut isn’t using the realm to its full potential. Papa believes that if Woodnut continues with the program he may climb out of his fear.

Although Woodnut has not maxed the potential of the realm, why is it so important to Papa (and the realm as a whole) that he take advantage of all the realms perks? Shouldn’t the experience be what you want?

Provocation

Summary: In Scene 9 Morris interrogates Doyle for breaking the law in the Hideaway. He began his questions by bringing up how Doyle joined and if he joined as a guest or not. Doyle responded by saying he joined as a guest first. Morris then began to inquire information about Papa. He wanted to know if Doyle has had any contact with him in the Hideaway. Morris also asks about Iris and the little girl that looks similar to Iris. Doyle tells him about how she was sent to boarding school. Morris immediately thinks that when one is sent to boarding school it’s because they’ve done something bad to get them sent there. However that is not always the case. Children can be sent to boarding school for multiple reasons.

Question: Do you believe it was fair for Morris to question Doyle as he did?

Provocation Scene 9

In scene 9 Morris is interrogating Doyle about breaking the rules inside of the Hideaway. He started off asking Doyle how he joined and if he first joined as a guest and Doyle said yes. He then started to ask about Papa and if he has become close with him. He also asked what they did together inside the hideaway. After interrogating him about Papa he started to ask about Iris and the little girl that looked like her. The other little girl went to a boarding school. Morris thinks a boarding school is where bad children go but thats not true most of the time. Do you guys think its fair that Morris is interrogating Doyle about Papa and Iris?

Provocations : Scene 16

This scene starts off with Mr. Sims asking Detective Morris questions regarding what she did to Iris because the last time Mr. Sims aka Papa seen her she was crying and that was something he was not use to because it had never happened before so he knew something had to happen. Mr. Sims was very upset and wanted answers out of Detective Morris. Detective Morris then reveals Iris’s true identity, which frustrated Mr. Sims because he believes in peoples privacy. Morris believed that he did not want to know who it was because Sims did not want to except their form other than the formality of iris, he was not ready to hear their true form. Detective Morris then revealed to Sims that Doyle(Iris) killed himself. which enraged Sims even more, he blamed Morris for his death. After going back and forth, it was revealed that Detective Morris fell in love with Iris. At the end of the scene Sims told why he created the hideaway, he told the story of the daughter of his neighbor who lived down the street. Explaining to Morris what she has done putting him into the real world with people. Morris explains to him that this is the world that we live in and he has to learn to live in it to, and then informs him that he is free to go.

Do you think Detective Morris was ashamed of falling in love with Iris? and if not do you think she felt like she was the caused of her/his death?

or

Do you think Mr sims was more upset about Detective Morris invading someones privacy, or was more upset at the fact that his image of Iris was destroyed?

Scene 10: A Sunny Spot (Group 2 Provocation)

Summary: In Scene 10, Iris and Papa are spending an afternoon together. Iris is talking about a couple of the other children, and papa comments on how they’re all jealous of each other. He proceeds to ask Iris if she believes there’s enough affection to go around. She says “Maybe” (Iris). The conversation continues about the affection, and suddenly Papa comments on the same affection that he gives is the same Mr. Woodnut seems to be showing. Papa talks about the axe again, and Iris agrees with it. Papa then gives Iris and Iris Day cake. She hears some children like sounds, and Papa says the sound must only be for children to hear, which makes Iris ask is that why he never wants her to grow up. Papa says he doesn’t want to lose her. Papa proceeds to tell her about the real poplars that grow. She continues to listen to the miraculous story of the real world, and Papa’s garden. At the end they both say they miss the trees, where Iris says “I love you” (The Nether), and Papa has no comment on it.

Question: Why do you think Papa didn’t say he loved her back even with the affection he claims to have?

Provocation Scene 11

Scene eleven begins in the interrogation room with Sims and Morris. In this scene, to me it became rather intense especially at the beginning. Morris attempts to get Sims to reveal where his server is located and describes what is actually happening in the Hideaway. Basically, a plethora of girls all looking alike are represented behind someone no matter who they are. They are allowed to get close with people; however, they cannot become emotionally attached or they are sent to boarding school. The guests are only allowed to choose through a variety of appearances. Sims is the creator so he controls everything of this world from the music to the how anything else appears. Morris describes the music that the users dance to as “dancing to his nightmare” (Morris, 47). In order for Morris to tell Sims what happened to Iris, Morris demands Sims to tell her where his server is located once again. Morris slips up and reveals that Sims looks the same as his person in the Hideway. Sims finds out Morris is a member of the Hideaway.

Is Morris just as guilty as Sims since she earnestly participated in the Hideaway as well? What legitimate intentions did she have behind joining the Hideaway? Is she trying to get Sims to directly confess by incorporating herself with the Hideaway?

Provocations Scene 9

Scene nine starts off with us back in the interrogation room, with Morris and Doyle.  Morris is pressure Doyle to answer questions about his relationship with Poppa but Doyle won’t give away much.  Morris the asks if there were more children then just Iris and Doyle tells her about Henrietta and that she was “sent away tp boring school”.  Morris becomes intrigued and soon learns that Poppa was involved with many children.  They also then talk about how Doyle is preparing to cross over full time into the Nether and his hesitation to do so.  Morris makes it seem like Poppa wouldn’t want Doyle to cross over full time and this ends up angering Doyle as he believes Morris doesn’t understand how the situation  works between Poppa and his kids.

Do you think Morris is right about Poppa not wanting Doyle to cross over full time or do you think she is just saying this to frustrate him?

Provocations Scene 10

I thought that this was a very interesting scene because you really get to see and understand the relationship between Iris and Papa. The setting starts out with iris and papa in the nether under a vault of tress. They talk about the other kids in the hideaway and how Iris is a jealous kind of person. Papa goes on to explain how she is special to him then says “Well, of course you are special. It seems one of our guest have noticed it too.”(Haley 35). He is talking about Mr. Woodnut and how them too are spend a great amount of time together. This could show how papa is jealous but tries to hide his emotions. Papa had brought a hugh box with him, when he revealed what was in it iris was fascinated. It was a beautiful cake made with never melting ice. They talk about there feelings towards each other and papa explains that this day was all for her, since earlier in the book she wanted a day for herself. The most important part of the scene is the end when iris tells papa “I love you” (Haley 38) and he hesitates to respond.

What do you think Papa’s real feelings are towards Iris or is he just using her?

In scene 8, the setting is in Iris’s bedroom. Her and Woodnut are dancing around in the room. Papa ends up coming into the room telling Iris that she forgot about their afternoon together. Papa was not very happy about Woodnut spending so much time with Iris. As the play goes on, Papa has a conversation with Woodnut about it, but Woodnut cant seem to understand why Papa will not allow him to get close to Iris. He ends up handing Woodnut an axe.

Why do you think Papa is not okay with close relationships in the realm?
